OIC Holds Israel “Fully Responsible” For Hamas Chief Haniyeh’s Killing

  • Holding Israel “fully responsible for the heinous attack” that killed Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran on July 31, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has requested “immediate and effective intervention” by the UN Security Council for maintaining international peace and security.
  • In a statement issued after its extraordinary meeting in Jeddah on Wednesday, the OIC termed Israel’s action, a “flagrant violation of international laws, the UN Charter, and a serious infringement of the sovereignty, and territorial integrity” of Iran.
  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, formerly the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1969. It consists of 57 member states, 48 of which are Muslim-majority.

Saudi Arabia Calls Hamas Political Bureau Chief’s Killing ‘Blatant Violation’

  • Saudi Arabia has described Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh’s killing as a “blatant violation” of Iran’s sovereignty.
  • Saudi Arabia’s deputy foreign minister, Waleed al-Khereiji, said his country rejects “any violation of the sovereignty of states or interference in the internal affairs of any country.”
  • Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s killing in Tehran on July 31. However, the Israeli government has not made any statement on Haniyeh’s killing.
  • Tensions in West Asia have escalated after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on July 31 that Ismail Haniyeh had been killed in an attack in Iran’s capital, Tehran.
  • In a statement following the meeting, the OIC declared that it “holds Israel, the illegal occupying power, fully responsible for this heinous attack,” describing it as “a serious infringement” of Iran’s sovereignty. Gambia’s Foreign Minister, Mamadou Tangara, warned that Haniyeh’s “heinous” killing and the ongoing war in Gaza could potentially spark a regional conflict. He termed the killing a “violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Iran.

Sheikh Hasina’s Son Claims Pakistan ISI Behind Bangladesh Unrest

  • Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Sheikh Hasina who quit as prime minister and fled Bangladesh, has blamed Pakistan for fueling the unrest in the country.
  • Sajeeb Wazed Joy said there is circumstantial evidence suggesting foreign interference and alleged involvement of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency.
  • Joy said although Sheikh Hasina, 76, would definitely return to Bangladesh, it has not yet been decided whether she will be back as a “retired or active” politician.
  • “Awami League is the largest and oldest political party in Bangladesh, so we cannot just walk away from our people. She will definitely return to Bangladesh once democracy is restored,” he added.
  • Joy thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for protecting his mother and appealed to India to help build international opinion and exert pressure to restore democracy in Bangladesh.
  • Terming Awami League an “all-weather ally of India”, he said India must ensure the security of Awami League leaders in Bangladesh by building international pressure.

Neeraj Chopra On Missing Gold At Paris Olympics

  • Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who earned a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, said on Friday, August 9, 2024, that while he gave his best, it was Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem’s day to win gold. Chopra said it was time to assess his performance and focus on future improvements. “We all feel happy whenever we win a medal for the country. It’s time to improve the game now. We will sit and discuss and enhance our performance,” Chopra told ANI.

  • Neeraj’s throw of 89.45m earned him second place on the podium. Although it was his best performance of the season, it wasn’t enough to secure gold, which went to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem with a throw of 92.97m, setting a new Olympic record.
  • The previous Olympic record of 90.57m was held by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway, set during the 2008 Beijing Games. Thorkildsen was present in the stands, along with three-time Olympic champion and world record holder Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic.

Lt. Gen. Sigdel is Nepal’s New Army Chief

  • The government of Nepal appointed Lieutenant General Ashokraj Sigdel as the Acting Chief of Army Staff of the Nepal Army with effect from Friday, an official statement said on Thursday. CoAS Prabhuram Sharma, who is going on a mandatory month’s leave starting Friday before formally retiring on September 9, handed over the charge to Lt. Gen. Sigdel at a function held at the Nepal Army Headquarters on Thursday, according to the statement issued by Directorate of Military Public Relations and Information.
  • On the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, President Ram Chandra Paudel designated Lieutenant General Sigdel as the Acting CoAS effective from August 9, the statement said.
