41st Indian Coast Guard Commanders’ Conference
- Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 41st edition of ICG Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi on September 24, 2024. The three-day meeting serves as a vital forum for ICG Commanders to engage in meaningful discussions on strategic, operational & administrative matters in the backdrop of the evolving geopolitical landscapes and complexities of maritime security.
- Raksha Mantri described ICG as India’s foremost guard, ensuring the security of the country’s vast coastline through constant monitoring of the Exclusive Economic Zone, and prevention of illegal activities such as terrorism and trafficking of arms, drugs & humans.
- The conference provides a platform for senior ICG leaders to meticulously evaluate key operational, material, logistical, HR development, training, and administrative initiatives undertaken over the past year.
US Designates UAE as Major Defence Partner
- The United States has designated United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a Major Defence Partner of the US to build on trilateral initiatives and coordination between the US, the UAE, and India.
- US Defence Secretary, Lloyd Austin said that the US looks forward to deepening its security and defence partnership with the UAE to build a more stable and prosperous Middle East region.
- They further pledged to pursue new opportunities to strengthen their economic and defence partnership; promote peace and stability across the Middle East and wider region; and deliver global leadership on issues of shared importance.
- The I2U2 Group is a new strategic partnership formed between India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. It is also referred to as the West Asian Quad/Middle East Quad/New Quad.
- It was established to enhance cooperation and collaboration in various areas such as water, energy, transportation, space, health, and food security.
- The main objective of this grouping is to promote economic development, scientific innovation, and regional stability.
- Member countries committed to working together to address common challenges and explore new opportunities for growth and progress.
Garuda Aerospace To Set Up Dedicated Defence Drone Facility Near Chennai
- Drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace has planned to establish a dedicated Defence Drone facility in the city, giving a fillip to the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.
- During his interaction with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi recently, Garuda Aerospace Agnishwer Jayaprakash discussed a new dedicated defence drone facility in Chennai with a state-of-the-art drone design, manufacturing and testing facilities as advised by HAL and BEML.
- The proposed facility would house the manufacturing capabilities for indigenous drone subsystem development and local manufacturing of critical components such as drone motors, batteries and transmitters.
- The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Talwar, arrived in Mombasa, Kenya for strengthening ties between the two nations. The frigate arrived in the harbours of Mombasa.
- The visit aims to strengthen ties further and reaffirm India’s commitment to constructive collaboration and mutual growth.
- INS Talwar was commissioned on 18 June 2003 and is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, based in Mumbai under the Western Naval Command. Captain Jithu George currently commands the ship, which has a complement of approximately 300 personnel.
- In December 2023, India and Kenya held talks to provide USD 250 million to modernise agriculture too.

- Acknowledging India’s “difficult history” with China, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, said that when he said that 75 per cent of the border dispute between the two countries have been sorted, he is only talking about the ‘disengagement’ part, while adding that challenge persists in other aspects.
- While addressing the Asia Society at the Asia Society Policy Institute on Tuesday (local time), the Foreign Minister highlighted how China violated the previous agreements during Covid pandemic, by increasing the troop deployment at the border, eventually resulting in clashes resulting in casualties on both sides.While he acknowledged that much of the disengagement at friction points has been managed, he emphasised that challenges persist, particularly concerning patrolling rights along the border. Jaishankar stressed the importance of ‘de-escalation’ as the next step in improving relations with China.He added that the evolving partnership has been exemplified by the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which aims to connect the Atlantic to India, enhancing trade and connectivity across regions.
- Jaishankar emphasised the strategic importance of the IMEC, noting that it not only strengthens India’s economic ties with the Gulf but also facilitates broader global trade routes.
China Acknowledges Testing Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
- China publicly acknowledged for the first time that it successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, in a move likely to raise international concerns about the country’s nuclear build-up.
- The ICBM, carrying a dummy warhead, was launched by the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force at 08:44 a.m. Beijing time (0044 GMT) on Wednesday and “fell into expected sea areas,” the Chinese defence ministry said in a statement, adding it was a “routine arrangement in our annual training plan” and not directed at any country or target.
- China “informed the countries concerned in advance,” according to a separate Xinhua report, which did not clarify the path of the missile or where exactly in the “high seas of the Pacific Ocean” it fell.
