Pakistan Got UNSC to Drop Mention of LeT offshoot TRF

  • In a turn of events that firmly points the finger of suspicion on Islamabad’s role in the Pahalgam attack, ET has learnt that the Pakistan government negotiated hard with the US to successfully drop the mention of The Resistance Front (TRF), which had claimed responsibility for the April 22 terror killings, from the UN Security Council statement condemning the incident.
  • Pakistan wants involvement of Russia and China in investigating the Pahalgam terror attack, according to a media report. Terrorists opened fire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing 26 people, mostly tourists, in the deadliest attack in the Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack.
  • On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the “perpetrators and conspirators” of the Pahalgam attack will be “served with the harshest response”.
  • In a recent interview to Russian government-run RIA Novosti news agency, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said, “I think Russia or China or even Western countries can play a very, very positive role in this crisis and they can even set up an investigation team that should be assigned this job to investigate whether India or Modi is lying or he is telling the truth. Let an international team find out.”

Asim Munir ‘Relocates His Family’

  • In the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists in Jammu and Kashmir, India and Pakistan have entered a period of heightened military and diplomatic tension.
  • India, attributing the attack to The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, responded swiftly by deploying its most advanced and indigenously built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, into the Arabian Sea, close to the Pakistani shoreline.
  • Satellite imagery from April 23-25 confirmed the carrier’s presence off the Karwar coast, operating as part of a larger strike group that includes destroyers, frigates, and anti-submarine vessels.
  • This deployment, just 600-700 kilometres from Pakistan’s coastline, is widely interpreted as both a tactical and symbolic assertion of India’s maritime dominance and a direct warning to Pakistan, signalling a shift from tense diplomacy to overt military posturing.

Successful Anti-Ship Missile Firings

  • The Indian Navy has recently showcased its maritime prowess through a series of successful anti-ship missile firings and participation in multinational naval exercises.
  • These activities, conducted amid heightened regional tensions following a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, demonstrate India’s advanced naval capabilities, commitment to indigenous defence manufacturing, and strengthening of strategic partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.
  • The naval operations included precision strikes by warships, testing of advanced missile defence systems, and participation in the maiden Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement exercise, collectively reinforcing India’s position as a formidable maritime force dedicated to protecting its national interests.
  • Indian naval warships have successfully conducted anti-ship firings to revalidate their readiness for long-range precision strikes, including the firing of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles during training exercises.
  • The INS Surat, the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, recently conducted a successful test firing of the Medium range surface-to-air missile (MR-SAM) air defence system in the Arabian Sea.

India To Procure Approximately 1,750 FICV

  • India’s ambitious Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) program marks a pivotal step in modernising the Indian Army’s mechanised forces, aiming to replace the ageing fleet of Soviet-era BMP-II Infantry Fighting Vehicles that have served since the 1980s.
  • The FICV initiative, a cornerstone of the Army’s modernisation drive, is designed to deliver advanced, domestically manufactured combat vehicles with superior mobility, firepower, and survivability, tailored for contemporary and future battlefield requirements.
  • A key development in the FICV program is the selection of Allison Transmission’s 3040 MX cross-drive transmission by all three government-funded original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)-Larsen & Toubro (L&T), TATA, and Mahindra-competing to develop prototype vehicles.
  • The FICV is envisioned as a fully tracked, amphibious armoured vehicle available in multiple variants-Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), Reconnaissance and Surveillance, and Command and Control-to meet the diverse operational needs of the Indian Army’s Mechanised Infantry and Armoured Corps.
  • From the perspective of Ukraine, Crimea holds immense strategic and security value. It enables control over maritime activity in the Black Sea and had become an integral part of Ukraine’s national identity over six decades.

Blast Rocks Iran’s Bandar Abbas Port

  • A massive explosion and fire rocked Iran’s largest port, Bandar Abbas, on Saturday, killing at least 28 people and injuring around 800 others, Iranian state media reported.
  • The blast struck the Shahid Rajaei section of the port and is believed to have been caused by the ignition of chemical materials stored in containers.
  • The blast shattered windows several kilometres away, reportedly even being heard on Qeshm Island, about 26 kilometres south of the port. Footage shared by Iranian media and agencies like Reuters and Tasnim showed chaotic scenes of injured people lying on roads as overwhelmed hospitals struggled to treat hundreds of patients.
  • Shahid Rajaei port, part of Bandar Abbas, is a critical node for Iran’s trade, handling about 80 million tons of cargo annually. It lies approximately 1,050 kilometers southeast of Tehran, near the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway through which 20% of the world’s traded oil passes.
  • Bandar Abbas also holds crucial strategic and trade significance not just for Iran but also for regional connectivity projects like the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
  • The INSTC, initiated by Russia, India, and Iran, is a multi-modal route linking the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran, and onward to northern Europe through Russia.
