Japan Offers Full Support To India
- Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Defense of Japan Mr Gen Nakatani at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. During the meeting, both sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and emphasised the need for global cooperation in this regard.
- Both the Ministers reviewed the defence and security pillars of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. They reaffirmed their commitment towards strengthening the bilateral relations and contributing towards regional peace.
- India and Japan share a long-term friendship, which has further gained qualitative momentum after the elevation of this collaboration to Special Strategic & Global Partnership in 2014.
- Since the attack, India has unveiled several punitive measures, banning the import of goods originating in Pakistan, prohibiting Pakistan-flagged vessels from docking at Indian ports, shutting its airspace to aircraft registered in or operated by that country, suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, downgrading bilateral ties, expelling most Pakistani citizens in India, and shutting down the only operational land border crossing at Attari.
Pak’s Anti-India Rant at UNSC
- Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council, convened at Pakistan’s request, concluded without any statement, resolution, or official outcome. No significant response emerged from the discussion.
- The meeting took place just hours after Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the situation had reached its most volatile point in years.
- Ahmad also termed India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty an “act of aggression,” in what India sees as a deliberate attempt to shift global focus away from Islamabad’s role in supporting cross-border terrorism.
- On Monday morning, Guterres voiced concern over tensions between India and Pakistan being at “their highest in years”, saying “it pains me to see relations reaching a boiling point”. Guterres made the remarks to the press amid rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 people.
Russia Extends Full Support In Fight Against Terrorism
- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extended full support to India in the fight against terrorism and emphasised that the “perpetrators of the heinous attack (Pahalgam) and their supporters must be brought to justice”.
- “Both leaders reiterated their commitment to further deepen India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. PM Modi conveyed greetings to President Putin on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day and invited him for the Annual Summit to be held in India later in the year,” Jaiswal added.
- The brutal assault on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 innocent tourists and left several others critically injured, unfolded in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam when four heavily armed terrorists, two of them from Pakistan, emerged from the surrounding dense forests and opened indiscriminate fire on tourists. The attack has been described as one of the most horrific in the region in recent memory.
- Monday’s call between the two leaders took place before the Russian President hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will be on an official visit to the Russian Federation from May 7-10 and take part in the ceremonial events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
MHA Asks Several States To Conduct Mock Drills
- The Union Home Ministry has asked several states to conduct mock drills on May 7 for effective civil defence, government sources said.
- The government has given the armed forces complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of India’s response in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack.
- The government has also announced a series of measures, including putting the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, to send a strong message to Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.
- “States and union territories have been instructed to organise and oversee the drill. It will involve local government authorities, Civil Defence wardens, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) members, and students from schools and colleges,” read an order from the MHA.
- The attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, was linked to Pakistan-backed terrorist groups, bringing bilateral relations to a boiling point.
- In response, the Government of India has directed the initiation of a series of measures aimed at preparing civilian populations and infrastructure for potential threats.
DRDO & Indian Navy Conduct Combat Firing
- DRDO and Indian Navy have successfully undertaken combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM).
- The system is an advanced underwater naval mine developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories
- – High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.
- MIGM is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system.
