2nd Edition of Tri-Services Future Warfare Course

  • The second edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course (FWC-02), an initiative to prepare India’s Armed Forces for next-generation warfare, concluded at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi on May 09, 2025.
  • Conducted over three weeks under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) and coordinated by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS), the course brought together top military leaders,
  • DRDO scientists, strategic experts, and for the first time, 15 representatives from the private defence industry including startups and MSMEs, marking a significant step towards a ‘Whole of Nation Approach’ to defence preparedness.
  • The programme featured specialised modules and domain-specific insights on evolving warfare paradigms, including focused scenario-building exercises and discussions with subject matter experts from India and abroad.
  • A major highlight was the interaction between industry and Armed Forces, enabling private players to gain real-time insight into tri-service operational needs in areas like military AI, autonomous systems, unmanned platforms, cybersecurity and advanced materials.

Temporary Suspension of Civil Flight Operations

  • The Airports Authority of India and relevant aviation authorities have issued a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports across northern and western India for all civil flight operations, effective from 9th  to 14th  May 2025 (which corresponds to 0529 IST on 15th May 2025), due to operational reasons.
  • The affected airports include those in Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai.
  • In addition, AAI has also announced the temporary closure of 25 segments of Air Traffic Service (ATS) routes within the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs) due to operational reasons. These 25 route segments will remain unavailable from ground level to unlimited altitude until 2359 UTC on 14 May 2025, which corresponds to 0529 IST on 15 May 2025.
  • Airlines and flight operators have been advised to plan alternate routings in accordance with the latest air traffic advisories. The closure is being managed in close coordination with Air Traffic Control (ATC) units to ensure safety and minimise disruption.
  • The authorities have stressed that the temporary suspension is necessary for operational reasons, and every effort will be made to mitigate the impact on air traffic operations. PM Chairs Meeting With Rajnath Singh, NSA, CDS, Service Chiefs

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting at his residence on Friday amid the rising tension between India and Pakistan.
  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval, CDS Gen Anil Chauhan, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi were among those present in the meeting.
  • Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a review of the current security situation. The review was held a day after Pakistan sought to target Indian cities and civilian infrastructure, in addition to some military targets. The attacks were effectively repelled by Indian Defence Forces.
  • Qureshi revealed that 300 to 400 drones were deployed across 36 locations, with several being shot down by Indian forces using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods. Initial investigations suggest the drones were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models.

Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos

  • Pakistan fired drones and missiles, including a Fattah-1 missile, at India in a pre-dawn strike on Saturday under what Pakistani media called Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos.
  • The firing of the Fattah-1 ballistic missile came as Pakistan escalated the situation a day earlier targeting 26 locations in India with drones and missiles after India’s Operation Sindoor.
  • “Pakistan has started ‘Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos’,” reported Radio Pakistan. Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos or Bunyan-un-Marsoos or Bunyanun Marsoos means “solid wall of lead“.
  • Bunyan Ul Marsoos is a verse from the Quran, the holy book of Muslims.
  • According to Al Jazeera, “Bunyan Marsoos is an Arabic phrase which directly translates into ‘a structure made of lead’.”
  • According to the Qatar-based Al Jazeera, the verse from Quran reads: “Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure.”
  • With the name, Pakistan likely wants to portray itself as an impregnable wall or structure fighting for a cause.
  • “Our forefathers believed that we were different from Hindus in every possible aspect of life. Our religion is different. Our customs are different… That was the foundation of the Two-Nation Theory,” said General Munir on April 16.

India Mobilises The “Terriers”: What Is Territorial Army

  • The Indian Army chief has been given the go-ahead by the government to activate the Territorial Army (TA) to provide for essential guard or in a support role to the regular army. The government’s decision comes amid the conflict with Pakistan.
  • Here’s a point explainer on the Territorial Army (TA)
  • There are 32 Infantry Battalions of the Territorial Army. Of this, 14 Infantry Battalions (TA) or approximately 14,000 soldiers can be deployed in areas under the Southern Command, Eastern Command, Western Command, Central Command, Northern Command, South Western Command, Andaman and Nicobar Command, and Army Training Command, the government said.
  • The Territorial Army was inaugurated by India’s first Governor General C Rajagopalachari on October 9, 1949. This day is celebrated as ‘TA Day’ every year in honour of the ‘Citizens Army’, and the first TA week was celebrated from November 8 to 15, 1952.
  • The TA began with various types of units such as Infantry Battalion (TA), Air Defence (TA), Medical Regiment (TA), Engineers Field Park Company (TA), Signal Regiment (TA), etc. However, these units were disbanded or converted into the regular army by 1972, except for Infantry Battalion (TA).
  • TA units have been part of operations in 1962, 1965, and 1971. The ‘Terriers’ also went to Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Rakshak, and the north-east region during Operation Rhino and Operation Bajrang.
