India Becomes Global Leader In Fast Payments
- International Monetary Fund (IMF) says, India leads the world in fast payments with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recording 18.39 billion transactions worth over 24.03 lakh crore rupees in June this year.
- According to a recent IMF note titled ‘Growing Retail Digital Payments: The Value of Interoperability’, UPI has revolutionized India’s payment ecosystem, processing over 18 billion transactions monthly.
- Akashvani’s correspondent reports that launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI has revolutionised the country’s payment ecosystem by enabling users to link multiple bank accounts to a single mobile app and make instant transactions with ease, IMF said.
- It has not only simplified peer-to-peer payments but also enabled millions of small businesses to accept digital payments at minimal cost. According to government data, UPI now processes over 18 billion transactions every month, accounting for 85 per cent of India’s total digital payments. In June alone, the platform recorded 18.39 billion transactions worth 24.03 lakh crore rupees, a 32 per cent increase from June last year.
- With 491 million users and 65 million merchants onboard, UPI connects 675 banks through a single digital framework.
- This shift has taken India away from cash and card-based payments and pushed it towards a digital-first economy. Millions of individuals and small businesses now rely on UPI for safe and low-cost transactions.
International Moon Day
- International Moon Day is being observed to commemorate the historic Apollo 11 mission, when humans first set foot on the Moon on July 20th in 1969. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognised this observance in 2021, following a recommendation by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
- The day celebrates global achievements in lunar exploration and promotes international cooperation, sustainable space practices, and the peaceful use of lunar resources.
- Across the world, the occasion is observed through public events, sky-gazing sessions, educational outreach, and science competitions, aimed especially at inspiring young people’s interest in space science.
- The theme for 2025, ‘One Moon, One Vision, One Future,’ highlights the spirit of global unity and shared ambition in the continued exploration of the Moon. India also has made remarkable strides in lunar exploration.
- From Chandrayaan-1’s discovery of water molecules on the Moon in 2009 to Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing near the lunar south pole in 2023, India has demonstrated its prowess in cost-effective and innovative space missions.

India’s Automotive Mission Plan 2047
- Government of India has launched the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) to transform India into a global automotive leader by 2047. This strategic roadmap aligns with the broader ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision.
- The plan emphasises innovation, sustainability, and increased global trade share. Multiple ministries, industry bodies, academia, and experts are collaborating to set clear milestones for 2030, 2037, and 2047.
- AMP 2047 builds on the earlier AMP 2016-2026 initiative. The previous plan aimed to place India among the top three global automotive hubs by value addition, exports, and job creation.
- AMP 2047 seeks to expand this vision with a stronger focus on technology, quality, and sustainability. Seven expert sub-committees have been formed to guide the process. They include representatives from government, industry, and academia. The plan targets sector growth, export enhancement, and industry advancement. It is designed to boost India’s share in the global automotive market. Innovation and quality are central themes. The roadmap moves beyond specific technologies or companies to focus on India’s global standing.
- The initiative includes developing infrastructure such as EV charging networks and adopting emerging technologies. AMP 2047 involves a broad range of stakeholders. These include Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), auto component makers, policy-makers, academia, and end users. Industry bodies like SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI actively participate. Several ministries such as Power, Road Transport and Highways, Commerce, Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Environment are engaged. Testing agencies and research think tanks also contribute. The roadmap sets clear targets for 2030, 2037, and 2047.
- These milestones aim at phased growth in production, exports, and technology adoption. The plan envisages India becoming a leader in engineering and manufacturing of vehicles and components. It also focuses on job creation and increasing the automotive sector’s contribution to GDP. The strategy is adaptive to future technological and market changes.
- AMP 2047 addresses challenges like rapid technology shifts, infrastructure gaps, and global competition. It promotes sustainability through electric mobility and cleaner fuels. The plan encourages innovation in product design and manufacturing processes. It also seeks to enhance skill development to meet future industry demands. Export growth is targeted through quality improvements and global market integration.
