Indian Army’s Spear Corps Nears Mt Gorichen Summit
The Indian Army’s Spear Corps is in the final stages of its mountaineering expedition to Mount Gorichen (6,488 m), the tallest peak in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector. The mission, which began on August 20, is designed to showcase resilience, adventure, and teamwork—qualities that embody the spirit of the Indian soldier.
Mt Gorichen also holds deep cultural significance for the local Monpa community, who regard it as a sacred peak. Each leg of the expedition has been carefully structured to push physical endurance, mental toughness, and collective efficiency under extreme high-altitude conditions.
HAL to Deliver 156 Upgraded Prachand Combat Helicopters
In a major boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will produce 156 upgraded Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) Prachand under a ₹62,700 crore project sanctioned in March 2025 by the Cabinet Committee on Security.
The delivery schedule extends till 2033, with 90 helicopters for the Indian Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force. The enhanced Prachand variants will feature advanced indigenous systems to improve survivability, lethality, and operational performance in high-altitude and contested environments—marking a decisive leap in India’s rotary-wing combat power.
Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2025 Concludes in Alaska
The 21st edition of Yudh Abhyas, a bilateral military exercise between India and the US, concluded on September 14, 2025, at Fort Wainwright and the Yukon Training Area in Alaska.
Around 450 Indian Army soldiers from the Madras Regiment trained alongside US troops of the 11th Airborne Division. The two-week drill focused on tactical coordination, joint operations, and field exercises in sub-arctic conditions. Beyond battlefield synergy, the exercise reaffirmed the growing India–US global strategic partnership, enhancing interoperability and operational readiness.
Bofors 2.0: Indian Army Upgrades Howitzers with New Engines
The Indian Army’s Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) has successfully re-powered its iconic FH-77B Bofors howitzers with modern Cummins engines, the same engines fitted in the indigenous 155 mm Dhanush howitzers.
This upgrade replaces outdated Volvo B20 Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), which faced spare-part shortages, thereby standardising artillery systems. The modernisation improves fuel efficiency, reliability, and ease of maintenance, ensuring that the Bofors remain battle-ready under contemporary warfare demands.
Indian Army Plans Large-Scale Procurement of Thermal Imaging Sights
In its continuing modernisation effort, the Indian Army has initiated the acquisition of 60,000 Thermal Imaging (TI) sights and 200,000 day sights. These advanced optical systems will significantly improve target acquisition, surveillance, and combat effectiveness for infantry weapons and vehicles in both day and night operations.
The move aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, as a majority of the technology will be indigenously sourced. Thermal imaging capabilities will enable soldiers to operate effectively in low-visibility conditions such as fog, smoke, or complete darkness.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Sign Strategic Defence Pact
In a notable regional development, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement in Riyadh during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit. The pact declares that any aggression against either nation will be treated as an act of aggression against both.
Signed at the Al-Yamamah Palace in the presence of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the agreement builds on decades of bilateral ties rooted in Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests. It underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen security cooperation and contribute to regional stability and global peace.
Earlier, Sharif also visited Qatar to extend solidarity following escalations in the Gulf and attended an emergency Arab-Islamic nations’ meeting on the Israel–Hamas conflict.
