INS Ikshak Commissioned

INS Ikshak, the third ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) series, was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy at the Naval Base in Kochi. The induction underscores the Navy’s focus on strengthening its hydrographic survey and maritime capability. Built with 80% indigenous components and 100% Indian steel sourced from SAIL, the ship is a prime example of India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

INS Ikshak is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic systems, helicopter operation facilities, and the ability to serve in dual roles — as a survey vessel and as a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) platform or hospital ship during emergencies.

BEL to Complete Delivery of 455 Akashteer Systems

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is on track to complete the delivery of 455 Akashteer Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting Systems to the Indian Army by 2027. The Akashteer network is designed to modernise the Army’s air defence command and control architecture, improving situational awareness, communication, and coordination among radars, sensors, and weapon platforms.

Over 100 systems have already been deployed across Army formations, and the remaining units will be delivered through phased schedules until 2027. The Akashteer system integrates seamlessly with radar networks such as the 3D Tactical Control Radar, Low-Level Lightweight Radar, and Flycatcher units, providing enhanced protection against aerial threats.

Mangalyaan-2 Mission Targeted for 2030

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has officially announced plans to launch Mangalyaan-2 in 2030, marking a new phase in India’s planetary exploration programme. The mission’s primary goal is to achieve India’s first soft landing on Mars, an ambitious step beyond the 2013 Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM).

The original Mangalyaan made India the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit and the first in the world to succeed on its maiden attempt. Operated for over seven years, it provided vital data about Mars’ atmosphere and surface. Mangalyaan-2 will build on this legacy, strengthening India’s position as a leading spacefaring nation and laying the groundwork for future interplanetary missions such as sample return or human precursor projects.

DRDO’s Next-Generation Electric Heavyweight Torpedo

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing an upgraded version of the Electric Heavyweight Torpedo (EHWT), designed to engage deep-diving submarines operated by adversaries like China.

The new model will feature enhanced range, endurance, and operational depth up to 800 metres, compared to the current 600-metre class systems. Using advanced electric propulsion technology, the torpedo ensures low noise levels, precise guidance, and high stealth, making it highly effective in anti-submarine warfare. This development aligns with India’s goal to bolster underwater combat capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.

Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment and Military Empowerment

The government of Pakistan, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is preparing to introduce the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which is expected to expand the powers of the military and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the proposal in the Senate, indicating significant political implications. The amendment is reported to modify Article 243 of Pakistan’s Constitution—dealing with the command and appointment of the armed forces—and includes provisions such as:

  • Establishment of constitutional courts
  • Revisions to the Chief Election Commissioner’s appointment process
  • Restoration of executive magistrates
  • Transfer of key ministries like education and population welfare to the federal government
  • Reduction of provincial financial autonomy under the National Finance Commission (NFC)

If passed, the amendment could centralize power and strengthen the military’s influence over Pakistan’s governance structure, potentially altering the civil-military balance in the country.
