Defence Current Affairs 03 February 2026
India has witnessed a series of significant developments across trade, defence manufacturing, space technology, and international military diplomacy, reflecting its expanding global influence and strategic ambitions.
India–US Trade Deal Brings Major Tariff Relief
In a major boost to bilateral trade, tariffs on Indian goods exported to the United States have been sharply reduced from 50% to 18% following a fresh trade agreement between the two countries. The announcement came after a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed that the two leaders spoke recently, though he did not disclose detailed discussions. Soon after, President Trump revealed that the agreement was finalised out of “friendship and respect” for Prime Minister Modi. As part of the deal, India has committed to significantly increasing imports from the United States, including energy, technology, agricultural produce, and other goods, with purchases expected to exceed $500 billion.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the decision, stating that the reduced tariff on “Made in India” products would benefit India’s 1.4 billion citizens. He emphasised that cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies unlocks immense opportunities and strengthens global peace, stability, and prosperity. Both leaders reiterated their intent to deepen collaboration on regional and global issues, building on earlier engagements and sustained diplomatic momentum.
Yantra India Granted ‘Miniratna’ Category-I Status
In a key move to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved ‘Miniratna’ Category-I status for Yantra India Limited (YIL). The decision aligns with India’s broader defence reform agenda under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
With this status, YIL’s board can independently approve capital expenditure of up to ₹500 crore for modernisation, new projects, and equipment procurement. The defence ministry noted that this autonomy will accelerate growth, enhance export potential, and strengthen indigenous capabilities in defence production, research, and strategic technologies.
Digantara Partners With Singapore on Space Security
India’s private space sector achieved a major international milestone as Bengaluru-based Digantara Industries entered into a strategic partnership with Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA). The collaboration focuses on developing advanced Space Situational Awareness (SSA) tools to protect satellites from the growing threat of space debris.
Under the agreement, Digantara will provide crucial services such as flight dynamics analysis and conjunction screening, enabling early warnings and real-time collision avoidance. The partnership highlights India’s rising role in space safety and sustainable orbital operations amid increasing congestion in Earth’s orbit.
CDS General Anil Chauhan Visits Armenia
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan led a high-level Indian defence delegation to Armenia, arriving in Yerevan on 1 February 2026 for a four-day official visit. The visit aims to deepen bilateral defence cooperation and advance shared strategic interests.
The delegation was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Armenia and senior Armenian defence officials. Discussions are expected to build on previous defence engagements, including the Joint Working Group Meeting on Defence Cooperation held in Hyderabad in October 2025. The visit reflects India’s growing engagement in the South Caucasus and supports its multi-aligned foreign policy approach amid evolving regional geopolitics.
Indian Navy Receives Indigenous Unmanned Surface Vessels
In another milestone for indigenous defence innovation, Mumbai-based Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd has delivered the first two Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) to the Indian Navy. These vessels are part of a larger order of 12 units and were developed under stringent naval requirements.
Designed for autonomous navigation, high-speed operations, and multi-mission roles such as surveillance and reconnaissance, the USVs enhance India’s maritime security capabilities. Their induction comes amid rising concerns over unmanned maritime threats in the region, positioning these platforms as critical force multipliers for the Navy.
