India Achieves Major Breakthrough in Ramjet Missile Technology

India has taken a significant leap in advanced missile propulsion with the successful test of the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) system by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The test was conducted from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha, at around 10:45 am, marking a crucial milestone in the country’s defence capabilities.

With this achievement, India has entered an elite group of nations that possess SFDR technology, which is essential for developing next-generation long-range air-to-air missiles. According to an official government statement, this technology will substantially enhance missile speed, range, and manoeuvrability.

Understanding Ramjet Technology

A ramjet is an air-breathing jet engine that relies on the missile’s high forward speed to compress incoming air, eliminating the need for complex moving components like turbines. In the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet system, solid fuel is combusted in a controlled manner as atmospheric air passes through the engine, generating sustained thrust at supersonic speeds.

Unlike conventional rocket motors that burn fuel rapidly and then coast, ramjet-powered missiles maintain high velocity throughout their flight, particularly during the terminal phase. This continuous propulsion makes them extremely difficult for enemy aircraft to evade, giving them a decisive operational advantage.

How DRDO Conducted the Test

During the trial, the missile was initially accelerated using a ground-based booster to achieve the required Mach speed. Once this speed was reached, the ramjet engine took over propulsion. DRDO confirmed that all critical components, including the nozzle-less booster, the solid fuel ducted ramjet motor, and the fuel flow controller, functioned exactly as intended.

The missile’s flight was monitored through multiple tracking instruments positioned along the Bay of Bengal coastline. The collected data validated both propulsion efficiency and control systems. Senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, such as DRDL, HEMRL, RC Imarat, and ITR, closely supervised the mission.

Strategic Importance for India

The successful SFDR demonstration has far-reaching strategic implications. Ramjet-powered air-to-air missiles can strike targets at extended ranges while retaining high kinetic energy just before impact. This capability gives Indian fighter aircraft a major edge in beyond-visual-range combat, allowing engagements from safer distances.

Globally, only a handful of countries have mastered ramjet propulsion due to the immense technical challenges involved in sustaining stable combustion at supersonic speeds, making this achievement particularly significant for India.

India and Tanzania Strengthen Defence Cooperation

India and Tanzania have agreed to expand their defence partnership, with a special focus on initiating cooperation between their air forces. The decision was taken during the fourth Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting held in Zanzibar from February 2 to 3.

The discussions covered a wide range of areas, including military training, maritime security, counterterrorism, peacekeeping operations, and capacity building in advanced fields such as cyber warfare, electronic warfare, and artificial intelligence. This new air force collaboration will complement the already existing cooperation between the two countries’ navies and armies.

As part of broader regional engagement, India continues to participate in multilateral exercises such as the India-Mozambique-Tanzania (IMT) Trilateral naval exercise, aimed at enhancing maritime interoperability and security in the Indian Ocean region.

Adani Defence and Leonardo Partner for Helicopter Manufacturing

In a major boost to India’s defence manufacturing sector, Adani Defence and Aerospace has partnered with Italian aerospace company Leonardo to establish a military helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in India. The collaboration aims to cater to an estimated requirement of around 1,000 helicopters for the Indian armed forces.

The partnership was announced in the presence of senior defence officials, including the Defence Secretary and the Director General (Acquisition). According to Jeet Adani, Director at Adani Defence & Aerospace, the collaboration is built on shared expertise and will cover manufacturing, pilot training, and world-class maintenance support.

The entire ecosystem will be developed on Indian soil, reinforcing the country’s self-reliance goals and strengthening its long-term strategic defence capabilities.

Supreme Court Takes Strong Stand on Data Privacy of Indians

The Supreme Court of India has issued stern observations against Meta Platforms and WhatsApp LLC, stating that the personal data of Indian citizens cannot be exploited. The Court was hearing appeals related to a ₹213.14 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) over WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed serious concerns about WhatsApp’s claim of providing user choice, noting that the platform enjoys a dominant market position. The Court warned that it would not allow the sharing of even a single piece of user data without safeguards and clear consent.

The dispute originates from the CCI’s findings that WhatsApp enforced a “take-it-or-leave-it” policy, forcing users to accept expanded data sharing with Meta entities as a condition for continued service. While the NCLAT later eased certain restrictions related to advertising data, it upheld the financial penalty, reinforcing the importance of protecting user privacy under Indian law.

Indian Army Receives Third Batch of Indigenous Kamikaze Drones

The Indian Army has received the third batch of indigenously developed JM-1 Loitering Munitions, also known as kamikaze drones, from Johnnette Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a Noida-based defence manufacturer. The delivery was made under an Emergency Procurement contract, highlighting the operational urgency of these systems.

With this supply, the company has delivered over 1,000 drones of various types to the Army, all of which are actively deployed across diverse terrains. The JM-1 loitering munition has already proven its effectiveness during Operation Sindoor, where it carried out precision strike missions in high-threat environments.

The successful induction and repeat orders reflect the growing confidence of the Indian Armed Forces in indigenous defence technologies and underline India’s steady progress towards self-reliance in military manufacturing.
