India to Launch Producer Price Index (PPI) in 2026

India is set to introduce a new Producer Price Index (PPI) along with a revised Wholesale Price Index (WPI) on 15 June 2026. Both indices will use 2022–23 as the base year, and they will operate simultaneously for five years before WPI is eventually phased out.

The move is aimed at providing a more comprehensive measure of inflation by capturing price movements from the producers’ perspective. Unlike the WPI, which tracks wholesale prices of goods, the PPI measures prices received by producers and includes services and input costs.

Components of the New PPI

  1. Output PPI – Measures prices received by producers for their products.
  2. Input PPI – Tracks changes in production input costs.
  3. Service PPI – Measures inflation in selected service sectors.

The Service PPI will initially cover sectors such as:

  • Banking
  • Insurance
  • Railways
  • Telecommunications

Significance

The introduction of PPI will align India’s inflation measurement system with international practices. Organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have recommended producer-based inflation indices for better economic analysis and policy formulation.

Key Facts

  • Launch date: 15 June 2026
  • Base year: 2022–23
  • WPI and PPI will run together for five years.
  • Service PPI covers major service sectors.
