Defence Current Affairs 24 August 2026
Mangrol Delivered to Indian Navy
The Indian Navy received Mangrol, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, on 21 August 2026.
The vessel has more than 80% indigenous content and is designed for operations in coastal waters. Its major roles include:
- Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
- Underwater surveillance
- Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO)
- Mine warfare
Mangrol is powered by waterjets and features modern torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, advanced radar and sonar systems.
The ship has been named after Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. The name also carries a naval legacy, recalling the erstwhile INS Mangrol, which served as an Indian Navy minesweeper until 2004.
The delivery represents another step in India’s effort to expand indigenous warship construction and strengthen its maritime security capabilities.
IAF Concludes Pitch Black and Udara Shakti 2026
The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully completed its participation in two major international air exercises — Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia and Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia.
During Exercise Pitch Black, hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Indian Rafale fighter aircraft operated alongside air forces from more than 20 countries.
The exercise involved complex Large Force Employment (LFE) missions in a high-threat, multi-domain environment. Such engagements provide participating air forces with opportunities to improve tactical coordination, exchange operational knowledge and enhance interoperability.
The cooperation was not limited to flying operations. Personnel also interacted on areas such as:
- Mission planning
- Aircraft maintenance
- Operational procedures
- Professional exchanges
- Cultural activities
The two deployments demonstrated the IAF’s ability to operate alongside international partners and contribute to greater security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Major Expansion Projects for GRSE and YIL
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, participated in the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for five expansion projects involving Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited (YIL).
The combined investment in these projects is approximately ₹3,500 crore.
Three GRSE projects are located at Kidderpore, Shalimar and Raichak, while two YIL projects are being developed at the Metal and Steel Factory in Ishapore.
GRSE Projects
The expansion is aimed at increasing India’s shipbuilding and ship-repair capacity. The new facilities will support the construction and refitting of warships as well as small and medium-sized commercial vessels.
The Raichak facility is particularly important because it will be capable of building warships of up to 200 metres in length. The site has a 356-metre waterfront, an existing 96-metre jetty and a draught of around 8–10 metres.
The expansion is expected to strengthen the defence manufacturing ecosystem while creating opportunities for employment, MSMEs and allied industries.
YIL Projects
The two YIL projects represent an investment of more than ₹750 crore and are intended to improve indigenous manufacturing capabilities for defence and other strategic sectors.
One major project involves a 3,000-tonne Heavy Duty Hydraulic Open Die Forging Press with two rail-mounted manipulators. It will replace the older 2,650-tonne press that has been operating since 1976.
The new facility is projected to generate annual savings of around ₹25.58 crore and support an annual turnover of approximately ₹500 crore.
India Indigenises More Than 15,700 Defence Items
The Ministry of Defence has achieved another important milestone by successfully indigenising more than 15,700 defence items.
According to the information provided, these efforts have resulted in an estimated import substitution value of around ₹9,000 crore.
The initiative forms part of India’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy, which seeks to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and develop a stronger domestic defence industrial base.
Indigenisation covers a wide range of components, sub-systems and equipment used in platforms such as:
- Fighter aircraft
- Helicopters
- Tanks
- Warships
- Missiles
- Radars
- Sonars
The SRIJAN Defence Portal, launched in 2020, has been an important mechanism in this process. More than 33,000 defence items have reportedly been listed for indigenisation, with over 15,700 already developed domestically.
The growing involvement of defence PSUs, private companies, MSMEs and start-ups is helping expand India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
INS Sudarshini Reaches Lisbon
The Indian Navy’s sail training vessel INS Sudarshini arrived at Lisbon, Portugal, on 22 August 2026 as part of its Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition.
During the port visit, Indian naval personnel and trainees are scheduled to participate in professional exchanges, cross-deck visits and cultural programmes with Portuguese naval authorities, local officials and members of the Indian diaspora.
The Lisbon visit marks the ship’s 15th port call during its seven-month voyage.
Through Lokayan 26, INS Sudarshini is carrying India’s message of friendship and maritime cooperation while strengthening people-to-people and professional ties with partner countries.
