Centre Permits E100 Ethanol Fuel in Flex-Fuel Vehicles

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit the use of E100 ethanol fuel in vehicles specifically designed and tested to operate on it. The move supports India’s efforts to diversify its transport energy sources and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.

What Is E100 Fuel?

E100 is a high-ethanol-content fuel intended for vehicles certified to use it. In fuel classifications, the letter “E” denotes ethanol, while the number indicates its nominal percentage by volume. Although E100 is commonly described as 100% ethanol, its actual composition and permitted specifications depend on the applicable fuel standards.

Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel that can be produced from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane and maize. In India, its use is closely linked to agricultural production, renewable energy and biofuel policies.

Types of Ethanol-Blended Fuels

Fuel typeNominal ethanol contentDescription
E1010%Petrol blended with 10% ethanol
E2020%Petrol blended with 20% ethanol
E85Up to 85%High-ethanol blend for compatible vehicles
E100Nominally 100%Fuel for vehicles certified for E100

What Are Flex-Fuel Vehicles?

Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to operate on multiple approved blends of petrol and ethanol. Their fuel systems and engine-management systems are engineered to handle the fuels for which they have been certified. However, not every flex-fuel vehicle can run on every blend, including E85 and E100.

India achieved its target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol for the ethanol supply year 2025–26. This nationwide blending achievement is distinct from authorising individual vehicles to operate on high-ethanol fuels such as E85 or E100.

Significance

The permission for E100-compatible vehicles represents a step towards diversifying India’s transport fuel options. It may support reduced reliance on imported crude oil and strengthen the connection between agricultural feedstocks and the domestic biofuel sector.

Key facts for examinations

  • Ministry: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)
  • Relevant rules: Central Motor Vehicles Rules
  • Fuel: E100 ethanol
  • India’s ethanol-blending target: 20%, achieved in ethanol supply year 2025–26

Vigilance Awareness Week 2026

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is observing Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 from 26 October to 1 November 2026. This year’s theme, as given in the presentation, is “Probity for Prosperity” (सत्यनिष्ठा से समृद्धि). The annual observance seeks to promote ethical conduct, transparency and accountability while strengthening public awareness about the prevention of corruption.

Objectives of Vigilance Awareness Week

Vigilance Awareness Week encourages individuals and institutions to uphold integrity in public life. It highlights the importance of honesty, responsible administration and transparent decision-making in government organisations.

Government departments, public sector undertakings (PSUs), public sector banks and other institutions have been encouraged to take the Integrity Pledge, organise awareness programmes and involve citizens in anti-corruption campaigns.

About the Central Vigilance Commission

The Central Vigilance Commission is India’s apex vigilance institution responsible for promoting vigilance and addressing corruption-related concerns in central government organisations.

The Commission came into existence in 1964 following the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption, headed by K. Santhanam. It subsequently received statutory status through the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003.

Significance

Vigilance Awareness Week reinforces the principle that good governance depends on integrity and accountability. By involving government institutions and the public, the campaign seeks to encourage ethical behaviour and strengthen efforts to prevent corruption.

Key facts for examinations

  • Organisation: Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)
  • Observance: Vigilance Awareness Week 2026
  • Dates: 26 October–1 November 2026
  • Theme: “Probity for Prosperity” (सत्यनिष्ठा से समृद्धि)
  • Committee associated with its establishment: K. Santhanam Committee

INOX India Opens Semiconductor Training Centre in Gujarat

INOX India and its partner organisations have inaugurated the Semi Orbit Skill Excellence Centre at the Paldi campus of ITM SLS Baroda University in Vadodara, Gujarat. The centre has been established to develop technical skills and prepare students, engineers and working professionals for specialised roles in semiconductor manufacturing.

Organisations Involved

The initiative brings together four organisations:

  • INOX India (INOXCVA): Will provide cryogenic and gas infrastructure and support engineering training.
  • ITM SLS Baroda University: Will lead academic programmes and training activities.
  • INOX Air Products: Will supply ultra-high-purity (UHP) gases.
  • Swagelok Bombay: Will contribute technology and expertise in orbital welding and process piping.

This collaboration combines industrial expertise with academic training to develop practical capabilities in semiconductor-related infrastructure.

Major Training Areas

The Semi Orbit Skill Excellence Centre will offer structured courses, practical workshops, certification opportunities and hands-on technical training.

Its programmes will focus on:

  1. Orbital welding applications.
  2. Process piping and pipe fabrication.
  3. Installation and maintenance of UHP gas distribution systems.
  4. Semiconductor process utility infrastructure.
  5. Advanced gas-handling and distribution technologies.

Orbital welding is a mechanised welding technique used to join pipes and tubes around their circumference. It is useful in applications where consistent weld quality and precision are important.

Ultra-high-purity gas distribution systems are also essential in semiconductor manufacturing, where contamination control and the reliable delivery of specialised gases are critical to production processes.

Significance

The establishment of the centre is aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and industrial requirements. Practical training in specialised welding, process piping and gas distribution can help develop a skilled workforce for semiconductor manufacturing and related high-technology industries.

The initiative also highlights the importance of collaboration between universities and industry in building technical expertise.
