Supreme Court Recognises Sex Work As A Profession

  • Supreme Court has recognized sex work as a “profession” and observed that its practitioners are entitled to dignity and equal protection under the law.
  • The court invoked its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.
  • Article 142 provides discretionary power to the Supreme Court as it states that the Supreme Court in the exercise of its jurisdiction may pass such decree or make such order as is necessary for doing complete justice in any cause or matter pending before it.
  • In 2020, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recognized sex workers as informal workers.

Digital India BHASHINI

  • Ministry of Electronics and IT conducted a brainstorming session with Researchers and Startups aimed to shape strategy for Digital India BHASHINI [BHASHa INterface for India].
  • The government intends to integrate start-ups’ innovation, development, and consumption of technology.
  • Digital India BHASHINI is India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) led language translation platform.
  • A Bhashini Platform will make Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) resources available to MSME (Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises), Startups, and Individual Innovators in the public domain.
  • Bhashini Platform is a part of the National Language Translation Mission.
  • The mission aims to ensure that as more Indians connect to the internet, they can access global content in their languages.

Swachh Survekshan 2023

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has launched the eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) – SS 2023 under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.
  • SS 2023 is curated towards achieving circularity in waste management. The survey would give priority to the principle of 3Rs – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
  • Swachh Survekshan was introduced by MoHUA in 2016 as a competitive framework to encourage cities to improve the status of urban sanitation while encouraging large-scale citizen participation.
  • Over the years, Swachh Survekshan has emerged as the largest Urban sanitation survey in the world.
  • In SS 2023, additional weightage has been given to source segregation of waste, enhancement of waste processing capacity of cities to match the waste generation, and reduction of waste going to the dumpsites.

Geetanjali Shree Win International Booker Prize

  • Hindi author Geetanjali Shree’s novel Ret Samadhi, Tomb of Sand has won the International Booker prize, becoming the first novel translated from Hindi to do so.
  • Geetanjali Shree is not only the award’s first Hindi winner, but also it is for the first time a book originally written in any Indian language has won the booker prize.
  • Geetanjali Shree said  There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to Tomb of Sand. This is an elegy for the world we inhabit, a lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom.
  • A Report Geetanjali Shree’s Tomb of Sand translated from Hindi by Daisy Rockwell has won the prestigious Booker prize, the prize money of 50,000 Pounds will be shared between the author and translator equally.
  • Shree’s book clinched the award, where 135 books competed.
  • Tomb of Sand is the story about an 80-year-old woman, who slips into a deep depression when her husband dies, then resurfaces to gain a new lease on life. The woman travels to Pakistan to confront the unresolved trauma of her teenage experiences of Partition, and re-evaluates what it means to be a mother, a daughter, a woman and a feminist.
  • Shree is the author of three novels and several short story collections, although Tomb of Sand is the first of her books to be published in the UK. Rockwell is a painter, writer and translator living in Vermont, US, who has translated a number of works from Hindi and Urdu literature.
  • Despite the fact that Britain has a very long relationship with the Indian subcontinent, very few books are translated from Indian languages, from Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and Bengali, said officials from Booker and hoped that Geetanjali’s success will inspire other authors from around the world to enter the competition.

PM Modi Chairs 40th PRAGATI Interaction

  • Prime Minister has asked the agencies working in the infrastructure sector to map their projects with water bodies being developed under Amrit Sarovar. Mr Modi said, this would be a win-win situation as the material dugout for the Amrit Sarovars can be utilised for civil works by the agencies.
  • The Prime Minister chaired the meeting of the 40th edition of PRAGATI, which is the ICT-based multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation, involving Centre and State governments. In the meeting, nine agenda items were taken for review including eight projects and one Programme. These eight projects have a cumulative cost of over 59 thousand 900 crore rupees concerning the 14 States. These states are Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
  • During the interaction, Prime Minister Modi also reviewed the ‘National Broadband Mission’ Programme.  States and Agencies were asked to leverage the centralised Gati Shakti Sanchar Portal to ensure timely disposal of Right of Way (RoW) applications. He added, that this would expedite the implementation of the Mission and they should work to use technology for enhancing ‘ease of living of the common man.
  • The Prime Minister further said, States may also formulate State level GatiShakti Master Plan along the lines of PM GatiShakti National Master Plan and constitute state-level units for this purpose. He said, this can go a long way in better planning, identifying and addressing key issues and ensuring better coordination for timely execution of projects.
  • Till the 39 editions of PRAGATI meetings, 311 projects worth 14 lakh 82 thousand crore rupees have been reviewed.

Pandit Nehru Remembered On His Death Anniversary

  • Jawaharlal Nehru (14 November 1889 – 27 May 1964) was an Indian anti-colonial nationalist, secular humanist, social democrat, and author who was a central figure in India during the middle of the 20th century. Nehru was a principal leader of the Indian nationalist movement in the 1930s and 1940s.
  • Upon India’s independence in 1947, he served as the country’s prime minister for 17 years. Nehru promoted parliamentary democracy, secularism, and science and technology during the 1950s, powerfully influencing India’s arc as a modern nation.
  • In international affairs, he steered India clear of the two blocs of the Cold War.
  • A well-regarded author, his books written in prison, such as Letters from a Father to His Daughter (1929), An Autobiography (1936), and The Discovery of India (1946), have been read around the world.

Govt Call Off Strategic Disinvestment Of BPCL

  • Government has decided to call off the present Expressions of Interest process for strategic disinvestment of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, BPCL.
  • In a statement, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, DIPAM said, the multiple Covid-19 waves and geo-political conditions affected multiple industries globally, particularly oil and gas industry. It said, owing to prevailing conditions in the global energy market, the majority of Qualified Interested Parties have expressed their inability to continue in the current process of disinvestment of BPCL.
  • Earlier, DIPAM had issued a global invitation in March, 2020 for expression of interest for strategic disinvestment of around 53 per cent equity share capital held by Government in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. It said, the decision on the re-initiation of the strategic disinvestment process of BPCL will be taken in due course based on review of situation.

Sri Lanka’s Present Crisis Is Due To Mismanagement

  • The International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has said that Sri Lanka’s present crisis is due to mismanagement.
  • Speaking at Davos, she said that it is a result of mismanagement and therefore, the most important thing to be done is to put the country back on a sound microeconomic footing.
  • According to media reports, Ms Georgieva further said, the IMF will strongly support Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring process and it will be available once the IMF has clarity on what the programme will look like and how debt can be restructured.
  • She also expressed gratitude to India for being such a good friend to Sri Lanka and for advocating support for Sri Lanka in this very difficult time.
