HAL Signs USD 100 Million Engine Contract With Honeywell

  • HAL on Wednesday signed a contract worth over USD 100 million with Honeywell for the supply and manufacture of 88 TPE331-12B engines/kits along with maintenance and support services to power the Hindustan Trainer Aircraft (HTT-40).
  • HAL CMD R Madhavan said the company has successfully developed Basic Trainer Aircraft (HTT-40) to address the basic training requirements of the IAF.
  • “There is (a) potential requirement of 70 aircraft. The contract for the same with IAF is under advanced stage of approval,” he added.
  • The TPE331-12B engine is a single shaft turboprop engine with an integral inlet and gearbox, two-stage centrifugal compressor, power turbine, gearbox, three-stage axial turbine and turbine exhaust diffuser as well as EEC for reliable power and outstanding operational characteristics “.
  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company, headquartered in Bengaluru, India. Established on 23 December 1940, HAL is one of the oldest and largest aerospace and defence manufacturers in the world today.
  • HAL is managed by a Board of Directors appointed by the President of India through the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • HAL is currently involved in designing and manufacturing of fighter jets, helicopters, jet engine and marine gas turbine engine, avionics, software development, spare supply, overhauling and upgrading of Indian military aircraft.

Annual Awards Function of The Western Fleet Evening  

  • The annual awards function of the Western Fleet (WF), Fleet Evening 2022, or ‘FLING’ as the event is popularly called, commemorating the accomplishments of the ‘Sword Arm’ of the Indian Navy, over the past year, was held at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai on 24 July 2022.
  • Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command was the chief guest at the event, hosted by Rear Admiral Sameer Saxena, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet. During the function, the Fleet Operations Officer presented the Annual Report of the activities/ achievements of the Fleet over the past year.
  • The FLING 22 showcased a stunning entertainment programme created completely by the in-house talent of the Western Fleet and their families. In the Fleet award ceremony, a total of 21 trophies, representing varied dimensions of maritime operations were awarded to meritorious ships. These include INS Chennai – Best Ship, INS Talwar – Most Spirited Ship and INS Aditya – Best Ship in Tankers & OPVs category. All awards recognised the overall excellence and valuable contribution of individual ships and the gallant crew, who have maintained a constant vigil in service to the Nation.
  • The Fleet expanded its footprint into the Red Sea, western edges of the Persian Gulf, Deep Water Channel in Gujarat, to Andamans & Nicobar Islands. These deployments included Mission Based Deployments, Anti-Narcotics missions, Presence cum Surveillance missions, as also EEZ surveillance. The fleet undertook a record-setting number of firings in all domains. The WF ships extensively participated in Maritime Partnership Exercises and numerous bilateral exercises across IOR and beyond, including Konkan with Royal Navy, Varuna with French Navy and PASSEX with Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Carrier strike group.

ISRO Earned USD 279 Million In Forex Through Satellite Launches For 34 Countries

  • ISRO through its commercial arms, has earned 279 million dollars in foreign exchange by launching satellites for global clients, Union Minister Jitendra Singh told the Lok Sabha.
    • ISRO in association with its commercial arms has successfully launched 345 foreign satellites from 34 countries on board Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
    • “Total foreign exchange revenue earned through the launching of foreign satellites amounts to USD 56 million and 220 million Euros approximately,” Singh said, without mentioning any time frame for such launches.
    • The latest PSLV mission was on June 30 when ISRO’s warhorse launch vehicle placed three Singaporean satellites into orbit.
    • PSLV-C53 mission by ISRO, successfully launched three Singapore customer satellites namely DS-EO, NeuSAR and SCOOB-1.

2 BSF Personnel on UN Peacekeeping Duty In Congo Killed During Violent Protest

  • Two BSF personnel, who were part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, were killed on Tuesday during violent protests. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he was deeply grieved at the loss of the two valiant Indian peacekeepers and demanded that the perpetrators of the “outrageous attacks”.
  • Both the deceased Bravehearts were in the rank of head constable and hailed from Rajasthan. At least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of demonstrations in Congo’s eastern city of Goma against the United Nations mission in the country.
  • India has contributed nearly 195,000 troops, the largest number from any country, participated in more than 49 missions and 168 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving in UN missions. India has also provided and continues to provide eminent Force Commanders for UN Missions.

APJ Abdul Kalam 7th Death Anniversary

  • India remembers former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his seventh death anniversary. On this day in 2015, the ‘Missile Man of India’ breathed his last after he suffered cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.
  • “When I am dead, do not declare a holiday; instead work a day extra”, he said.

Father of India’s own Satellite Launch Vehicle

  • ISRO selected Dr Kalam as its project director to help build India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV). The ten years of hard work paid off as SLV-III successfully launched the satellite Rohini into orbit in July 1980.

The Missile Man of India

  • After two decade-long stints in ISRO, he was appointed the chief executive officer of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). The programme under the MoD developed many missiles under the famed Agni and Prithvi projects.
