MOD Signs Rs 1,700 Crore Deal For Dual Role Surface-to-surface Brahmos Missiles With BAPL
- The Ministry of Defence on Thursday signed a Rs 1,700-crore deal with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for the acquisition of dual-role capable surface-to-surface BrahMos missiles for deployment on warships of the Indian Navy.
- “Providing further impetus to Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence production, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) signed a contract with BAPL for the acquisition of additional dual-role capable surface-to-surface BrahMos missiles at an overall approximate cost of Rs 1,700 crore under the ‘buy-Indian’ category. Induction of these dual-role capable missiles is going to significantly enhance the operational capability of Indian Navy fleet assets,” said a statement from the MoD on Thursday.
- A combination of the names of the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, BrahMos missiles are designed, developed and produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture company set up by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Mashinostroyeniya of Russia. The first test launch of the initial version of Brahmos took place in 2001. Various types of the BrahMos, including those which can be fired from land, warships and the Sukhoi-30 fighter jets, have already been developed and successfully tested and inducted since then.
MEHAR BABA COMPETITION -II
- To provide a boost to the growing indigenous drone industry, Raksha Mantri launched the “MEHAR BABA COMPETITION-II” on 06 April 2022 at Air HQ (Vayu Bhawan). The competition is aimed at developing technology for a “Swarm Drone Based System to Detect Foreign Objects on Aircraft Operating Surfaces”.
- The competition is named after the legendary Air Commodore Mehar Singh, MVC, DSO – affectionately also known as Mehar Baba. The first edition of the competition was launched in October 2018 and culminated in October 2021.
- IAF is seeking innovative solutions towards detection of Foreign Object Debris without physical employment of manpower on the aircraft operating surfaces. Registration for this competition is open to Indian citizens and Indian registered entities only.
- Raksha Rajya Mantri addressed the Air Force Commanders on the inaugural day of the conference and stressed the vital role being played by the IAF in enabling India to be the Net Security Provider in the IOR in furtherance of the Prime Minister’s SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region) Doctrine. He reiterated the fact that the IAF is the most technologically intensive and quickest military response available to the Government for furthering India’s leverage.
TATA Developed ALS 50 Loitering Munition Successfully Tested In Pokhran
- Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) developed ALS 50 loitering munition by successfully demonstrating its ability to launch an attack during tests on Thursday at Pokhran. ALS 50 is an autonomous system designed for Vertical to Take Off and Landing (VTOL) and will soon be inducted into the armed forces.
- The ALS 50 has also proved its ability to operate from high altitude areas during tests in Ladakh early this year. The ALS 50 can take off as a quadcopter and transitions into fixed wing mode during flight for long distance trips.
- The test is a landmark for the private industry which has scaled up efforts in recent years to develop tailored solutions for the armed forces, on the back of policy initiatives steered by the Defence Ministry.
- The VTOL capability gives the system the ability to operate in areas where limited space is available, like narrow valleys, fortified mountain positions, small jungle clearings and the decks of warships. The armed forces have been looking to induct a range of loitering munitions – relatively low cost ‘suicide drones’ that can be used to accurately take down high value targets like command centres, missile launchers and enemy armour.
With An Eye On China, US To Develop Drones With India
- The United States and India will co-develop drones, as Washington seeks closer ties with Delhi as a way of countering China.
- India will build these aircraft and export them to other countries in its region. Delhi wants to diversify its weaponry, which is mainly Russian-made and also develop its own defense industry. “And we want to support India on both fronts and are doing so,” Eli Ratner, assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs
- Ties between the United States and India were troubled for many years, but their shared wariness of an aggressive China brought the countries closer together under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former president Donald Trump.
- In 2016, the United States designated India as a “major defense partner,” and since then, the two countries have signed agreements that facilitate transfers of top-grade arms and deepen military cooperation.
