The Indian Navy’s major operational level exercise TROPEX for the year 2023, which took place across the Indian Ocean Rim from November 22 to March 23, concluded this week in the Arabian Sea. Coastal Defense Exercise Sea Vigil and Amphibious Exercise AMPHEX were both part of the overall exercise design. These exercises included significant participation from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Set in the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the exercise’s theatre of operations stretched approximately 4300 nautical miles from north to south up to 35 degrees south latitude and 5000 nautical miles from the Persian Gulf in the west to the North Australian coast in the east, spanning an area of more than 21 million square nautical miles. Approximately 70 Indian Navy ships, six submarines, and over 75 aircraft took part in TROPEX 23.

The conclusion of TROPEX 23 marks the end of an intense operational phase for the Indian Navy that began in November 2022. On March 23, the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri spent a day at sea aboard the newly commissioned Indigenous Aircraft Carrier Vikrant as part of the final Joint Phase. He reviewed the Indian Navy’s operational and material readiness, during which the Navy demonstrated operational maneuvers and various aspects of combat operations, such as deck operations of indigenous LCA and live weapon firings.

During his address to the Fleets, he praised the Indian Navy’s operational readiness and emphasized that the country looks to the Navy to ensure that our adversaries’ economic lifelines and military capabilities are disrupted to the point where their warfighting efforts can no longer be sustained. He also stated that he is fully confident that the Indian Navy is fully capable of safeguarding India’s national interests in the maritime domain and will foil any potential adversaries’ diabolical plans to threaten India’s peaceful existence. The Hon’ble RM praised the Indian Navy for being at the forefront of the ‘Make in India’ Initiative and for leveraging the Aatmanirbharta path to be ‘Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future Proof.
