Decline In Tuberculosis
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that decline in tuberculosis incidence is an outcome of India’s dedicated and innovative efforts. Commending the country’s progress, Mr Modi said in a social media post that through a collective spirit, the government will keep working towards a TB-free India.
- Government remained steadfast in commitment to creating a TB-free India. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) India has recorded a decline of 17.7 percent in TB incidence from 2015 to 2023.
- This rate is more than double the global decline of 8.3 per cent.
- The government has expanded and strengthened the National TB Elimination Programme by taking key initiatives such as the Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana to provide essential nutritional support to TB patients.
First Asian Buddhist Summit
- Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation, is organizing the First Asian Buddhist Summit (ABS) on 5th and 6th November in New Delhi.
- The theme of this summit is ‘Role of Buddha Dhamma in Strengthening Asia’. President Droupadi Murmu is expected to grace the event as the Chief Guest.
- The Summit will bring together Sangha leaders, scholars, experts and practitioners from various Buddhist traditions across Asia to foster dialogue, promote understanding and address contemporary challenges faced by the Buddhist community.
- Buddhism holds a unique position in the spiritual and cultural history of India and pan-Asia. The Summit marks a unique opportunity to bring together diverse voices of Buddha’s Dhamma across Asia.
352nd Governing Body Meeting Of ILO
- 352nd Governing Body meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is underway in Geneva. During the meeting Labour and Employment Secretary Sumita Dawra highlighted India’s commitment to improving living standards reflected in significant initiatives covering all dimensions of poverty that have led to 248 million individuals escaping multidimensional poverty in the last nine years as measured by the multidimensional poverty index.
- She also stated the employment growth within the country adding around 170 million persons in economic activity during 2016-17 and 2022-23 as per provisional estimates.
- Ms. Dawra also spoke about the Government initiatives like PM Jan Dhan Yojana, which bridged the financial gap for the unbanked, while PM Jeevan Jyoti Yojanaand PM Suraksha Bima Yojana offered offer affordable life and accident insurance.
- She also stressed on India’s remarkable transformation over the past decade in terms of financial inclusion and prioritizing access to financial services for vulnerable populations.
- India emphasized that a convergent approach will ensure UN bodies operate more synergistically for fulfilling the shared vision of promoting social justice and sustainable inclusive development globally.
1st Ministerial Declaration On Disaster Risk Reduction
- With the active participation of a high-level Indian delegation, a G20 meeting has arrived at a consensus in finalising the first Ministerial declaration on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), according to an official statement.
- G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) Ministerial Meeting was held from 30th October to 1st November 2024 in Belem, Brazil.
- Principal Secretary also emphasized India’s approach to disaster risk reduction, on five priorities of DRRWG. These are Early warning systems, Disaster resilient infrastructure, Disaster Risk Reduction financing, Resilient recovery and Nature based solutions.
- The first DRRWG was established on India’s initiative during its presidency of G20, last year in New Delhi.
- Alongside DRRWG, the Indian Delegation also participated in Troika meetings with the Ministers of Brazil and South Africa, and held bilateral meetings with ministers from the host country Brazil and other countries including Japan, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, Germany among others.
Dr. S. Jaishankar On 6 Day Visit To Australia & Singapore
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will be on a six day visit to Australia and Singapore. During the visit, Dr Jaishankar will travel to Brisbane and inaugurate India’s 4th consulate in Australia.
- He will also co-chair the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Canberra.
- External Affairs Minister will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session of the 2nd Raisina Down Under to be held in the Australian Parliament House.
- He is also scheduled to have interactions with Australian leadership, parliamentarians, members of the Indian diaspora, business community, media and think tanks.
- On the second leg of the visit, Dr Jaishankar will travel to Singapore for an official visit on 8th of this month, during which he will address the 8th Roundtable of ASEAN – India Network of Think Tanks. He will also meet the leadership of Singapore to review the close partnership between the two countries and explore avenues to further enhance the bilateral relationship.
Indian Startup Ecosystem
- Indian startup ecosystem has reached 12.2 billion dollars in funding in the first 10 months this year. It has already surpassed the total amount raised throughout 2023, with two months to go.
- Homegrown startups crossed 1 billion dollars in funding again across 119 deals in the month of October.
- September saw the second-highest funding with 1.63 billion dollars, behind the peak of 1.92 billion registered in June.
- In October, the growth and late-stage funding segment comprised 28 deals, contributing 846.2 million dollars to the total funding amount.
- Last month, Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the setting up of a 1,000 crore rupees venture capital (VC) fund dedicated to the growing space sector.
- The deployment period of the proposed venture capital fund, under the aegis of IN-SPACe, is planned to be up to five years from the actual date of the start of the fund operations. The average deployment amount could be 150 to 250 crore rupees per year, depending on the investment opportunities and fund requirements.
India’s Updated NBSAP At COP 16 Meeting
- Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, launched India’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) at the 16th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP 16) in Colombia.
- During the launch event, the Minister highlighted India’s ‘whole-of-government’ and ‘whole-of-society’ approach in updating its NBSAP. The updated biodiversity strategy acknowledges environmental challenges and outlines strategies to address them.
- It addresses the challenges through ecosystem restoration, species recovery programs, and community-driven conservation efforts.
- Minister said the updated biodiversity strategy focuses on the restoration of degraded ecosystems, protection of wetlands, and on the sustainable management of marine and coastal areas.
- Mr. Singh also said that the action plan is a vital roadmap to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, with a longer-term vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. The document was released on the 30th of last month.
India’s Atanu Das Bags Bronze Medal
- India’s Atanu Das has bagged Bronze medal in Swiss Open Indoor Archery in Lausanne, Switzerland. Olympian Atanu Das defeated Switzerland’s Thomas Rufer 6-4 in the Recurve Men’s Bronze medal match. Earlier in the Semifinals, Atanu faced a defeat against Romain Fichet of France 4-6.
