10th Century Kadamba Inscription

  • An inscription dating back to the 10th century A.D. has been found in the Mahadeva temple at Cacoda in southern Goa.
  • The inscription, written in both Kannada and Sanskrit, sheds light on a historical episode during the Kadamba period, providing valuable insights into the region’s past.
  • The discovery was brought to light by environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar, highlighting the collaborative effort in uncovering this historical gem.

  • The inscription is engraved in both Kannada and Nagari characters, showcasing the linguistic diversity of the region during the 10th century.
  • Professor Murugeshi’s analysis suggests a connection to the Kadambas of Goa, who were the reigning power in the region during that period.
  • The inscription narrates a significant historical event during the rule of Talara Nevayya, who governed the Mandala region.
  • Talara Nevayya’s son, Gundayya, devoted himself to realizing his father’s ambition of capturing Gopura, the port of Goa.
  • Tragically, Gundayya lost his life in a valiant pursuit of this goal. The inscription serves as a poignant record of this historical episode.
  • In 960 A.D., Kadamba Shasthadeva achieved a notable conquest by capturing the city of Chandawar in Goa. Subsequently, he seized the strategically important port of Gopakapattana.

PRITHVI VIGYAN Scheme

  • The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has launched an ambitious initiative named PRITHVI (PRITHvi VIgyan), a comprehensive scheme by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • With a significant budget of Rs. 4,797 crore, the program spans from 2021-26, marking a new era in the study and understanding of Earth sciences in India.
  • The PRITHVI scheme aims to revolutionize our understanding and interaction with various Earth systems.
  • Strengthening the continuous monitoring of the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, geosphere, cryosphere, and solid earth to track and record essential changes.
  • Creating advanced models for better forecasting of weather, oceanic, and climatic hazards, and deepening the understanding of climate change.
  • Venturing into the unexplored polar regions and high seas to discover new phenomena and resources.
  • Innovating technologies for the sustainable exploitation of oceanic resources, benefiting society. Converting scientific insights into practical services for societal, environmental, and economic advantages.
  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) plays a pivotal role in this initiative, translating scientific knowledge into valuable services for society. Weather forecasts and warnings, Alerts for natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and tsunamis, Earthquake monitoring and more.

Kuvempu Award

  • In a prestigious recognition of his literary contributions, renowned Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay has been awarded the 2023 Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar.

Punjab 1st State To Map All Accident Prone Sites

  • Punjab, known for its vibrant culture and rich heritage, has achieved a significant milestone in road safety. The state has become the first in India to meticulously map all 784 accident black spots using the Mappls App, a cutting-edge navigation system developed by MapMyIndia.
  • In a strategic move, the Punjab Police has teamed up with MapMyIndia to integrate real-time traffic updates and alerts into the Mappls App.

  • This collaboration aims to provide citizens with crucial information about black and blind spots, ensuring a safer driving experience. The joint effort between law enforcement and technology exemplifies a proactive approach towards road safety.
  • One of the standout features of this collaboration is the implementation of voice alerts in Punjabi.
  • Commuters navigating through Punjab using the Mappls App will now receive real-time alerts in their regional language, specifically in Punjabi.
  • These voice alerts will serve as warnings for upcoming black spots, enhancing situational awareness and reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Punjab has taken a pioneering step in customizing road safety measures to cater to the linguistic preferences of its residents.

India – Nepal

  • Nepal has signed a long-term agreement for the export of 10,000 MW of power to India in the next 10 years.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Nepal counterpart N P Saud jointly inaugurated 3 cross-border transmission lines. Mr Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to the Himalayan nation.
  • An MoU for cooperation in renewable energy was also signed by the Nepal Electricity Authority and National Thermal Power Corporation Limited of India.

  • India will extend a financial package of 75 million dollars for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the district of Nepal affected by last year’s earthquake.
  • A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Jajarkot District in Nepal on the 3rd of November last year, killing over 150 people and injuring nearly 400. The earthquake was the deadliest to strike the country since 2015.
  • Discussions focused on our overall bilateral ties, trade and economic relations, land, rail, and air connectivity projects, cooperation in defence and security, agriculture, energy, power, water resources, disaster management, tourism, civil aviation, people to people and cultural exchange and development partnership, Mr. Jaishankar said on social media.

  • This week-long residential program takes place in a historic vernacular school (established in 1888) in Vadnagar, Gujarat.

Beach Games Held At Ghoghala Beach

  • In Diu, Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the Beach Games held at the Ghoghala Beach of the Union Territory.
  • He said that by organising this festival, new dimensions will be established and the culture and tourism will get a boost.
  • Due to this festival, beach sports will also be promoted in other beach-bearing States and Union Territories of the country. Earlier, Mr. Thakur attended the ‘My Bharat’ programme at the Malala Auditorium in Diu. He said that, so far, 45 lakh youth have registered their names in the Mera Bharat platform.

  • Mr. Anurag Thakur says, The Beach Games are being organised at the Ghoghala Beach of the Union Territory.
  • More than 1200 players are participating in this sports festival. A total of eight different sports are included in the Beach Games, including beach volleyball, pencak silat, beach boxing, beach soccer, and sea swimming along with traditional sports such as Malakhambah, beach kabaddi, and tug of war, more than 20 in the beach games.
  • Players from States and Union Territories are participating in the Beach festival. As its subject theme is dolphins, the picture of Dolphins has also been placed in various game paintings and banners. The closing ceremony will be held at the INS Khukhri Memorial. Administrator, Union territory Praful Patel, Member of Parliament Daman & Diu Lalubhai Patel also remained present in the event.
