Kargil Vijay Diwas

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated every 26 July in India, to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War for ousting Pakistani Forces from their occupied positions on the mountain tops of Northern Kargil District in Ladakh in 1999.
  • Initially, the Pakistani army denied its involvement in the war, claiming that it was caused by Kashmiri militant forces.
  • However, documents left behind by casualties, the testimony of POWs, and later statements by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief of Army Staff Pervez Musharraf showed the involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces, led by General Ashraf Rashid.
  • Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year in honor of the Kargil War’s Heroes. This day is celebrated all over India and in the national capital, New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate every year.

Droupadi Murmu Takes Oath As India’s 15th President

  • Ms. Droupadi Murmu Was Sworn In As the 15th President Of India. She Was Administered Oath By Chief Justice Of India N. V. Ramana At The Central Hall Of Parliament.
  • The 64-year-old Is The Youngest President Of The Country. She Is Also The First President Of India and Is Born After Independence. 
  • Ms. Murmu Joined Politics In 1997 And Was Elected Councilor In Rairangpur Notified Area Council Of Odisha.
  • She Served Twice As An MLA From Rairangpur Assembly Constituency From 2000 To 2009 And Once As A Minister For Commerce, Transport, Fisheries, And Animal Resources Development In Odisha Government.
  • On 18th May 2015, Ms. Murmu Took Oath As Governor Of Jharkhand And Stayed In The Post Till 12th July Last Year. She Was The First Woman Governor Of The State And The First Female Tribal Leader To Serve As A Governor In Any Indian State.

10th Death Anniversary Of Harmohan Singh Yadav

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a program marking the 10th death anniversary of Harmohan Singh Yadav via video conferencing.
  • Harmohan Singh Yadav was a towering figure and leader of the Yadav community. Prime Minister’s participation in the program is in recognition of the contribution of the late leader to farmers, backward classes, and other sections of the society.
  • Harmohan Singh Yadav remained active in politics for a long time and served in various capacities as MLC, MLA, member of Rajya Sabha, and chairman of ‘Akhil Bhartiya Yadav Mahasabha’.
  • He was also instrumental in establishing many educational institutions in and around Kanpur with the help of his son Sukhram Singh.
  • Harmohan Singh Yadav was awarded Shaurya Chakra in 1991 for his display of valor in protecting the lives of several Sikhs during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Income Tax Day

  • The Income Tax Day or Aaykar Diwas was introduced in 2010 to commemorate 150 years of this tax in India. The day is celebrated with several outreach programs and events to promote the payment of taxes and educate potential taxpayers that payment of taxes is the duty of citizens.
  • By paying our taxes on time, we can contribute to the country’s progress.
  • The provision of Income Tax was introduced in India on July 24, 1860, by James Wilson to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during World War I.
  • The practice continued for years before a formal structure or department was introduced for managing tax collection, in 1922.
  • The Income-tax Act of 1922 introduced a specific nomenclature to various Income-tax authorities.
  • Amendments to the act in 1939 introduced two key structural changes – appellate functions were separated from administrative functions, and a central charge was created in Mumbai (then Bombay).
  • The 163rd anniversary of Income Tax Day was observed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and all its field offices across the country.

National Broadcasting Day

  • National Broadcasting Day is observed every year on July 23 in India. It aims to remind us about the impact of radio on our lives.
  • The day also marks the start of organised radio broadcasts in the country by All India Radio.
  • All India Radio started broadcasting in 1923 via 2 private stations called the Radio Club of Bombay and Calcutta Radio Club. It was on July 23, 1927, that organised broadcasting kick-started in India.
  • It was on July 23 that All India Radio began its journey as a private company called Indian Broadcasting Company ltd (IBC).
  • Eventually, the Indian Broadcasting Company ltd (IBC) was taken over by the British Raj and transformed into All India Radio (AIR) on June 8, 1936.
  • The name Akashvani (voice or announcement from the skies) was formally adopted for the national broadcaster in 1956.
  • The name was derived from a poem of the same name by Rabindranath Tagore in 1938.
  • He wrote the poem for the inauguration of Kolkata’s first short-wave radio station, as noted by historian Chandrika Kaul.
  • AIR is now a division of Prasar Bharati which also controls Doordarshan. Prasar Bharti was previously under government control but is now an autonomous body.

Government Amends Flag Code Of India

  • The government has amended the Flag Code of India to allow the tricolor to be displayed in the open and on individual houses or buildings day and night.
  • The provision earlier allowed the flag, when displayed in the open, to be flown from sunrise to sunset as far as possible.
  • Now, a member of the public, a private organization, or an educational institution is allowed to hoist the flag on all days and occasions, ceremonial or otherwise, consistent with the dignity and honor of the national flag.
  • The move comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence.
  • The Flag Code of India was earlier amended on December 30, 2021, allowing the use of polyester, apart from cotton, wool, silk, and khadi for making hand-spun, hand-woven, and machine-made flags.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon people to hoist the Tricolour or display it in their homes between 13th and 15th August.
  • Mr. Modi said this Har Ghar Tiranga movement will deepen our connection with the national flag as the nation is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav this year.

Netaji Bose Island Handover To A&N Administration

  • The Andaman and Nicobar Command handed over historic Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island to Andaman & Nicobar Administration for the larger development of tourism and infrastructure growth of the island.
  •  NITI Ayog and Island Development Agency have taken several initiatives to develop these Islands under Act East Policy in the last few years.
  • The A&N Islands are strategically very significant for the country. Therefore, boosting connectivity is very crucial. Expansion is being done to strengthen air connectivity with the mainland. This will also help in tourism growth.
  • The island has been under the Administrative Control of INS Jarwa since 1967.
  • Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island had been the Administrative headquarters of British rule in the islands till the Japanese occupied it in 1942.
  • The island had Chief Commissioner Bungalow and other structures which got damaged during Second World War. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose also stayed on the island during his visit to Andaman and Nicobar in 1943.
  • The island is situated three kilometers away from Port Blair. Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed it Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island in December 2018. Erstwhile, it was known as Ross Island.

“Create For India” Campaign

  • A 215-member Indian athlete contingent across 16 disciplines is all set to participate in the Commonwealth Games beginning on July 28 in Birmingham. Sports Authority of India has started a new initiative to cheer for Team India with the campaign “Create for India.”
