India, Maldives Explore Deploying Civilian Operators For Platforms

  • India is looking at options to replace the 77 military personnel that are at the centre of a controversy with the Maldives and the next month’s core group meeting scheduled here would discuss the topics threadbare.
  • The personnel are currently deployed in the Maldives to operate two advanced light helicopters and one Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft, which are involved in search and rescue missions, EEZ surveillance and joint hydrography missions.
  • India’s military presence in the Maldives, now at the centre of a controversy, has been focused on managing two helicopters and a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft that were gifted to the island nation to conduct search and rescue operations and surveillance of its Exclusive Economic Zone.
  • The aerial assets, which are under direct control of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), have helped conduct more than 600 medical.

UK’s Royal Naval Ship HMS Spey visits Kochi  

  • HMS Spey, an offshore patrol vessel of the UK’s Royal Navy which is on a goodwill visit from January 17 to 27 accorded a warm reception amidst fanfare by the Indian Naval band on its arrival in Kochi, an official statement said.
  • During the port call at Kochi, professional and social interactions and sports fixtures were held between the Indian Navy and Royal Navy.
  • The Royal Navy personnel visited onboard INS Sunayna and shared best practices towards enhancing interoperability between the two Navies. Cdr Paul Caddy, Commanding Officer, HMS Spey called on Cmde Sarvpreet Singh, Chief Staff Officer (Operations), Southern Naval Command and discussed issues of mutual interest.

French Air and Space Force Participate In Fly-past Rehearsals

  • The French Air and Space Force participated in fly-past rehearsals above the national capital’s Kartavya Path on Saturday ahead of the 75th Republic Day parade.
  • This comes after a 241-member tri-service Indian armed forces contingent led by a military band participated in the Bastille Day Parade in July last year to mark the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership.
  • “To mark the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, a 241-member tri-service Indian armed forces contingent led by a military band also participated in the Parade,” the PMO said in a statement.

Iran-backed Militants Launch Ballistic Missiles At US Airbase In Iraq

  • Several US personnel were wounded after Iran-backed militants in Western Iraq launched multiple rockets and ballistic missiles on Saturday (local time) targeting Washington’s al-Assad Airbase in Western Iraq, said US Central Command.
  • CENTCOM said that several US personnel are undergoing evaluation for “traumatic brain injuries” and at least one Iraqi service member was wounded in the attack.
  • Earlier on Saturday, the US conducted airstrikes against a Houthi anti-ship missile that was aimed into the Gulf of Aden and was prepared to launch, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

Made in China Air Defence Systems Fail To Protect Pak Airspace Repeatedly

  • These Chinese assets are either malfunctioning, or have over-promised, or are being handled by untrained personnel.
  • The recent missile and drone strike by Iran into Pakistan has raised questions in various quarters, both in Pakistan and internationally, on whether the Pakistan military was capable enough to protect its airspace, which has been repeatedly violated in the last few years.
  • Similarly, when multiple Indian Air Force assets flew into Balakot, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in February 2019, to target the training camps of terror organization Jaish-e-Mohammad, then too the Pakistan Air Force defence system that was put in place to counter such developments, was not able to respond in reasonable time.
