Vijay Chowk Reverberates To Indian Tunes During Beating Retreat 2024  

  • The historic Vijay Chowk in the national capital came live to foot-tapping tunes and synchronised steps by members of armed forces during the ‘Beating Retreat’ ceremony on Monday to mark the end of Republic Day celebrations.
  • The music bands of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, IAF and CAPF played captivating tunes before a distinguished audience including President Droupadi Murmu, who is Supreme Commander of defence forces, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, PM Narendra Modi and union ministers.
  • The ceremony began with the massed band’s ‘Shankhnaad‘ tune which was followed by enthralling tunes such as ‘Veer Bharat’, ‘Sangam Dur’, ‘Deshon ka Sartaj Bharat’, ‘Bhagirathi’, and ‘Arjuna’ by Pipes and Drums band.
  • ‘Beating Retreat’ traces its origins to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army indigenously developed the unique ceremony of display by the massed bands. It marks a centuries-old military tradition, when the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms, withdrew from the battlefield and returned to the camps at sunset at the sounding of the Retreat.

Govt Extends Ban Imposed On Terror Group SIMI for 5 Years

  • The government on Monday extended the ban imposed on terrorist group Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for five years for its involvement in fomenting terrorism and disturbing peace and communal harmony in the country.
  • In a post on ‘X’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that bolstering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of zero tolerance against terrorism, SIMI has been declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ for a further period of five years under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
  • The SIMI was first banned in 2001 when the Atal Bihar Vajpayee government was in power and since then the ban has been extended every five years.
  • The group is disrupting the secular fabric of the country by polluting the minds of the people by creating communal, disharmony, propagating anti-national sentiments and escalating secessionism by supporting militancy and undertaking activities which are prejudicial to the integrity and security of the country, the notification said.

Defence Secretary To Visit Oman

  • Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane will pay a visit to Oman on January 30 & 31, 2024. During the visit, the Defence Secretary will co-chair the 12th Joint Military Cooperation Committee meeting with the Secretary General, Ministry of Defence, Oman Dr Mohammed bin Naseer bin Ali Al-Zaabi.
  • During the bilateral talks, Giridhar Aramane will review defence cooperation between the two countries and explore new initiatives like industry collaboration to further strengthen bilateral engagements. The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of shared interest.

Indian Navy Rescues Hijacked Iranian Ship FV Iman from Somali Pirates

  • The Indian Navy on Monday launched yet another rescue mission in the Arabian Sea, rescuing an Iranian vessel that had been hijacked by Somali pirates. The crew of the fishing vessel had been taken hostage and were released when an Indian warship reached the spot and coerced the pirates to deboard.
  • The incident is the latest in a series of drone and pirate attacks on merchant vessels in the region, including the Red Sea and parts of the Arabian Sea.
  • The Indian navy has stepped up surveillance in the troubled region substantially and deployed task groups consisting of around 10 warships in the face of the recent attacks on India-bound merchant vessels.

Delhi Police All-Women Team Wins Republic Day Best Marching Contingent Award

  • An all-women contingent of the Delhi Police that marched down the Kartavya Path during the 75th Republic Day Parade has been adjudged the Best Marching Contingent this year. On Martyrs’ Day (January 30), the Delhi Marching Contingent will receive the esteemed award.
  • On January 26, the Delhi Policewomen contingent made headlines as it was the first time in the history of the force that only women personnel marched on Republic Day. In addition to this, 80 percent of the participants this year were from the northeastern states.
