EXERCISE ‘BOLD KURUKSHETRA’ 2023                             

  • The Singapore Army and Indian Army participated in the 13th edition of Exercise Bold Kurukshetra, a bilateral armour exercise from 06-13 March 2023 at Jodhpur Military Station, India.
  • For the first time in the exercise series, both armies participated in a command post Exercise, which involved Battalion and Brigade level planning elements and computer wargaming.
  • Hosted by the Indian Army, the exercise involved soldiers from the 42nd Battalion, Singapore Armoured Regiment and an Armoured Brigade of the Indian Army.
  • The ten-day long joint training that commenced on 05th March fostered a common understanding of mechanised warfare in emerging threats and evolving technologies, developing inter-operability through a computer simulation-based Wargame.

Curtain Raiser Award Of President’s Colour To INS Dronacharya 

  • INS Dronacharya, the Gunnery School of the Indian Navy, is being awarded the prestigious President’s Colour on 16th March 23 by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu.
  • The President’s Colour or the Nishan is considered the highest honour that the Supreme Commander, President of India, bestows on a unit for its exceptional service to the Nation.
  • INS Dronacharya is entrusted with the training of officers and sailors of the Navy, Coast Guard and friendly foreign maritime forces on all aspects of gunnery and missile warfare. Training of Officers and sailors to deliver ordnance on target effectively is the core focus of INS Dronacharya.

India Remains World’s Top Arms Importer: SIPRI Report                        

  • India remained the world’s top arms importer, but its imports declined by 11 % b/w 2013-17 and 2018-22, according to a report released on Monday by Stockholm-based defence think-tank SIPRI. The decline was linked to a complex procurement process, efforts to diversify arms suppliers and attempts to replace imports with local designs, the report said.
  • The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said the five largest arms importers in the world during 2018-22 were India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia and China.
  • The five largest arms exporters were the United States, Russia, France, China and Germany.
  • The report said that imports by Pakistan, the world’s eighth-largest arms importer during 2018-22, increased by 14 %, with China as its main supplier.
  • It said France’s arms exports increased by 44 % between 2013-17 and 2018-22 and most of these were to countries in Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East.
  • The report said India received 30 per cent of France’s arms exports during 2018-22 and France displaced the US as the second-largest supplier of arms to India after Russia.
  • It said the United States’ share of global arms exports increased from 33 to 40 per cent, while Russia’s fell from 22 to 16 per cent.
  • The report said three of the top 10 importers during 2018-22 was in the Middle East — Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt.
  • Saudi Arabia was the world’s second-largest arms importer during 2018-22 and received 9.6 per cent of all arms imports in the period, it said.

DRDO Conducted Two Consecutive Successful Flight Tests Of VSHORADS       

  • DRDO conducted two consecutive successful flight tests of the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on March 14, 2023.
  • The flight tests were carried out from a ground-based man-portable launcher against high-speed unmanned aerial targets, mimicking approaching and receding aircraft. The targets were successfully intercepted, meeting all mission objectives.
  • VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) meant for neutralising low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges. It has been designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Reviews Construction Of Infra Projects Along Northern Border     

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the progress in the construction of various infrastructure projects in the northern border areas.
  • The high-level meeting was attended by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Power Minister RK Singh, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and MoS Defence Ajay Bhatt.

IAF Earmarks 39 Military Airfields, 9 Advance Landing Grounds For Use By Civil Aircraft

  • The Indian Air Force has earmarked 39 military airfields and nine Advance Landing Grounds for use by civil aircraft said IAF on Tuesday.
  • “IAF has earmarked 39 military airfields and 9 Advance Landing Grounds for use by civil aircraft. This Joint User Airfield scheme now gives access to areas that were earlier considered remote,” said Indian Air Force.
  • Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry on Friday, signed a contract for the procurement of six Dornier-228 aircraft for the IAF from HAL at the cost of Rs 667 crore.
  • The aircraft was used by IAF for Route Transport roles and communication duties. Subsequently, it has also been used for training transport pilots of the IAF.
  • The present lot of six aircraft will be procured with an upgraded fuel-efficient engine coupled with a five-bladed composite propeller.
  • The aircraft is ideally suited for short-haul operations from semi-prepared/short runways of the North East and island chains of India.
