EU Set To Train 15,000 Ukrainian Troops, Provide More Arms Funding For Kyiv
- European Union foreign ministers are expected to agree on a mission to train 15,000 Ukrainian troops from next month and an extra 500 million euros worth of funding for arms deliveries to Kyiv when they meet in Luxembourg on Monday.
- The ministers are also likely to slap additional sanctions on Iran over Tehran’s latest crackdown on protesters and take a fresh look at the bloc’s relations with China, paving the way for a potentially tougher stance on Beijing.
- The foreign ministers will agree to add a further 500 million euros ($486 million) to a fund that reimburses EU member states for arms delivered to Ukraine, bringing the total amount earmarked for arms for Kyiv to over 3 billion euros.
- Several EU nations — including Germany and France — are already training Ukrainians to use the modern artillery systems, missile launchers and air defences they are delivering to Kyiv.
- But the EU has lagged behind in providing large-scale training to help the country’s military face off against Russia’s invading forces. The United States, Canada and Britain have already been training thousands of troops.
- The European training mission should become operational next month even if the final details are still being hammered out. An official said the plan is initially to provide basic training to 12,000 soldiers and specialised instruction to 2,800 more.
- Ukraine’s neighbour Poland is due to serve as the main hub for the mission. “It is the way out for the Ukrainians and the way back in,” said one European diplomat. Germany is also set to be a key staging post for training.

IAF Differs Mig-29UPG Retirement Plans
- The Indian Air Force plans to carry out a second life extension programme on its fleet of MiG-29 frontline fighter jets, prolonging their service life from 40 to 50 years.
- The first life extension program was launched in the mid-2000s after it was inducted in 1986. The then-Defence Minister, AK Antony, stated in Parliament that the technical life of the MiG-29s was being increased from 25 to 40 years in order to meet the IAF’s operational requirements.
- The improved technical life of the MiG-29 aircraft will begin to lapse in 2025 and provided the depleting squadron strength and slow rate of inductions, it is critical to determine how long this fleet can continue to operate effectively.
- The project will be executed at IAF’s No.11 Base Repair Depot near Nashik, which is mandated with the repair and overhaul of Russian origin fighter aircraft. Only Indian firms will be permitted to participate in the programme.
- The IAF operates about 66 of the Soviet/Russian origin fighters in three squadrons. Two of them are based at Adampur and Jamnagar, while the third has recently moved to Srinagar to replace a MiG-21 squadron that was phased out. In addition, the Navy also procured 35 MiG-29s for its fleet air arm.
