Keel Laying Of Second Ship (BY 524, MALWAN) And Third Ship (BY 525, MANGROL)                       

  • Keel laying of the Second ship (BY 524, Malwan) and third ship (BY 525, Mangrol) of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) (CSL) project was presided by R Adm Sandeep Mehta, ACWP&A, and R Adm I B Uthaiah, DG WDB, respectively on 21 Feb 23, in presence of Shri Madhu S Nair, CMD, CSL and other senior officials of Indian Navy and CSL at M/s CSL, Kochi. With all major and auxiliary equipment/systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, these ships are the proud flag bearer of the “Make in India” initiative of the Ministry of Defence.
  • The contract for the construction of eight ASW SWC vessels was concluded with    M/s CSL, Kochi, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives of the Government of India. These ships are being built with a service life of 25 years. The availability of these vessels will provide sub-surface surveillance in coastal areas with the purpose of detecting and neutralizing underwater threats.

Indigenous Cruise Missile System Powered By A ‘Manik’ Turbofan Engine Tested                            

  • India’s first indigenous technology cruise missile was tested from launchpad No. 3 of ITR Chandipur in Odisha’s Balasore district, using a domestic small turbofan engine Manik and an upgraded radio frequency seeker.
  • The ITCM technology demonstrator, developed by the DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) lab, validates the STFE of the 450 KGF thrust class using the subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay platform.
  • The engine was created in collaboration with IIT Chennai and IIT Bombay’s Centre for Propulsion Technology.
  • Nirbhay is a long range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile designed and developed in India by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which is under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The missile can be launched from multiple platforms and is capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads. It is currently deployed in limited numbers in Line of Actual Control (LAC) during standoff with China.

UAE Hosted 1st I2U2 Vice-Ministerial Meeting In Abu Dhabi                           

  • The United Arab Emirates hosted the first vice-ministerial meeting of the I2U2 in Abu Dhabi this week. Attended by senior officials from four countries India, Israel, the United States and the UAE.
  • Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W Fernandez lead the US delegation at the meeting in Abu Dhabi on February 21-22, according to an official statement. Fernandez represented the US at the I2U2 Business Forum, hosted by the UAE.
  • “During the forum, partner countries discussed opportunities to advance regional cooperation and investment opportunities to build partnerships that address some of the region’s most pressing issues, including management of the energy crisis and food insecurity,” the State Department said.
  • I2U2 initiative is a new grouping of India, Israel, USA and UAE.
  • In the grouping’s name, ‘I2’ stands for India and Israel, whereas ‘U2’ stands for USA and the UAE.
  • This is a great achievement which tells the geopolitical changes that happen in the region.
  • This will not only revitalize and re-energize the system of alliances and partnerships around the world, but also stitch together partnerships that did not exist previously or were not utilized to their full extent.

Army Tweaks Agnipath Scheme                    

  • The Indian Army has tweaked the Agnipath scheme to include pre-skilled youth, ITI/Polytechnics graduates in the technical category with the aim to increase eligibility criteria for Agniveers.
  • The changes are being introduced to cut time spent on training individuals, media reports said. The Army said that the tweaks are likely to make the scheme open to more candidates.
  • The development comes after the Army revised the selection process for ‘Agniveers’ making it mandatory for aspirants to appear for an online common entrance examination, followed by physical fitness and medical tests. The first online CEE is slated to be held in April at nearly 200 locations across the country.

BrahMos Missile’s Hypersonic Version Can Be Developed Within 8 Years Of Govt Nod         

  • Once it gets government approval, BrahMos Aerospace would require only eight years to develop the hypersonic version of the supersonic cruise missile which would then enable the forces to strike enemy targets much faster than before.
  • The forces have projected a requirement of hypersonic missiles and bombs and the requirement is being felt more after seeing the success of such weapons in the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • The success rate of the BrahMos in test-firings has helped the Indo-Russian joint venture firm to export it to countries like the Philippines and many other customers are making inquiries about it.
  • The Brahmos missile has achieved big success within India. All three services operate different versions of the missile system.
  • The missile system has also evoked a lot of interest among African and middle and South East Asian countries.
  • The missile system is produced in a joint venture with a Russian government firm that is also involved in the development of missiles in their own country as well.

IIT Roorkee, IAF Join Hands To Develop Indigenous Defense Technologies 

  • IIT Roorkee and IAF, signed an MoU intending to promote the development of indigenous technologies and equipment through Research and Development in areas of mutual interest on February 14, 2023, at Bengaluru during Aero India 2023 aiming at self-reliance of Indian Defence system.
  • This MoU outlines the collaborative effort between IIT Roorkee to achieve the ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ vision for shared global prosperity and making a step ahead toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat by creating a world-class domestic defence industry through research and development.
