Rajnath Singh To Attend SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh is visiting Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 23rd to 25th August 2022 to attend the Annual Meeting of the Defence Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) the Member States. During the Annual Meeting, Defence Cooperation issues among the SCO Member States will be discussed and it is expected that a joint communiqué will be issued after the deliberations. Shri Rajnath Singh’s address at the meeting is slated to be held on August 24, 2022.
  • During the visit to Tashkent, Raksha Mantri will meet his Uzbekistan counterpart Lieutenant General Bakhodir Kurbanov, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which is also the host country. In addition, meetings are also scheduled with Defence Ministers of some other Member countries of SCO on the sidelines of this meeting, where bilateral issues and issues of mutual interest will be discussed.
  • During the stay in Tashkent, Raksha Mantri shall pay homage at the monument of Late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and meet the Indian Diaspora in Uzbekistan.
  • SCO is a permanent intergovernmental international organization.
  • It’s a Eurasian political, economic and military organization aiming to maintain peace, security and stability in the region.
  • It was created in 2001.
  • The SCO Charter was signed in 2002 and entered into force in 2003.

India Calls For More Representation Of Developing Countries At UNSC

  • Highlighting that the challenges the world is confronted with cannot be dealt with through outdated systems and governing structures, India on Monday said that the most urgent need of the hour is to make the United Nations Security Council more representative of developing countries to reflect current geopolitical realities.
  • At a UNSC briefing on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Promote Common Security Through Dialogue and Cooperation”, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj noted, “The most urgent thing therefore for us to do is to make the Security Council more representative of developing countries, so as to reflect current geopolitical realities.
  • The United Nations was established in 1945 with the noble objective of saving succeeding generations from the scourge of war. As the most universal and representative international organization, the UN has been credited with keeping the peace over the last 77 years.

China Disregarding Border Pacts With India: Jaishankar

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said that China is disregarding border pacts with India and the issue is clearly casting a shadow over bilateral relations. The minister is on an official visit to Brazil.
    • “Right now, we are going through a very difficult phase mainly because we have agreements with China going back to the 1990s, which prohibit enmassing of troops in the border areas. They have disregarded that,” Jaishankar said during a community event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
    • He also recalled India’s successful evacuation of its citizens from the war zone during the Russia-Ukraine conflict under Operation Ganga and said that India is capable of big things.
    • The connection between India and Brazil is five-century old.
    • The strategic partnership established in 2006 between Brazil and India has deepened, with both countries cooperating closely within BRICS, IBSA, G4, G20, and the wider multilateral context of the United Nations.
    • Brazil and India signed a bilateral ‘Defence Cooperation Agreement’ in 2003 that calls for cooperation in defence-related matters, especially in the field of Research and Development, acquisition and logistic support between the two countries.
    • Under the framework of the agreement, a ‘Joint Defence Committee (JDC)’ has been set-up that meets at regular intervals.

Spanish President Expected To Visit India Later This Year; As Ties Between India, Spain Improve Steadily      

  • Spain is India’s sixth largest trading partner with which it has had a double taxation avoidance agreement (DTA) since 1993. In the light of improving bilateral and trade ties between the two nations, Spain’s President Pedro Sanchez is expected to make an official visit to India during the course of this year.
  • In recent years, imports into Spain have tripled in number compared to exports. In 2021, Spanish exports were €1,496.53 million and imports from India were €4,200.10 million, a coverage rate of 35.6 per cent.
  • Meanwhile, India is in the process of getting 16 of the 56 Airbus military aircraft that they ordered from Spain last year -the cost of which is Euro 2.5 billion. These aircraft will replace Indian Air Force’s Avro aircraft. Spain is also hopeful of India considering buying five AIP submarines for its Navy, which is manufactured by Navantia.
