DRDO & Indian Navy successfully flight-test Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile

  • DRDO and the Indian Navy successfully flight-tested Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on August 23, 2022.
  • The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability. The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency seekers, intercepted the target with high accuracy. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.
  • During the test launch, flight path, and vehicle performance parameters were monitored using flight data, captured by various Range instruments such as Radar, Electro-optical tracking system (EOTS) and Telemetry systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The launch was monitored by senior scientists from various DRDO labs involved in the design and development of the system such as Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, and R&D Engineers, Pune.
  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has complimented DRDO, Indian Navy, and associated teams on the successful flight trial of VL-SRSAM and stated that the missile will prove to be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy.
  • Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Chairman DRDO congratulated the teams involved in the successful flight test and said that the trial has proved the effectiveness of the weapon system. He added that it will further strengthen the Indian Navy for neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets.

Inter-Services Aquatics Championship Commences at Visakhapatnam

  • The 71st Inter Service Aquatics Championship for the year 2022 is being held at Command Swimming Pool, Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam. The event was declared ‘Open’ by Rear Adm R Vijay Sekhar, NM, PD SBC(V) at an impressive opening ceremony on Monday 22 Aug 22.
  • The annual Championship is conducted under the aegis of the Services Sports Control Board and aims to select Services sportsmen for representation in National and thereafter international aquatics events.
  • The inaugural day of the Championship witnessed four swimming events namely, 400M Free Style, 200M Individual Medley, 50M Breaststroke and 4 x 200M Free Style Relay. The Chief Guest, Rear Adm R Vijay Sekhar awarded the medal winners and wished all teams the very best for the forthcoming events.

Indian Navy Requires Three Aircraft Carriers: Vice Admiral  

  • To deter Chinese presence in Indian Ocean Region, Southern Naval Command Chief Vice admiral MA Hampiholi said Indian Navy requires three aircraft carriers and with carrier battle group centered around Vikrant will provide unmatched flexibility and deterrence when the time comes calling to go for action.
    • He revealed that more than 544 registered big and small Indian firms’ industrial houses with the Cochin Shipyard Limited have contributed to making Vikrant.
    • “These include the big names like BEL, BHEL, L&T, Kirloskar, and so on and so forth. In addition, orders worth 292 crores were placed Over the last 10 years to about 100 MSMEs so about 76 percent.
    • The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier would soon be commissioned into the Indian Navy as Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant which would bolster India’s position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and its quest for a blue water Navy.
    • The ship would be capable of operating air wing consisting of 30 aircraft comprising of MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) (Navy).

IAC Vikrant Equipped With 16-bed Hospital, 2 Operation Theatres To Cater Medical Emergencies      

  • Vikrant, the indigenous aircraft carrier soon to be commissioned into the Indian Navy, consists of a mini hospital with 16 beds, two operation theatres and for the first time, a CT scan machine. These will be installed on the ship which will cater to every medical emergency on board.
  • “Vikrant has a primary medical complex and we have more than 40 compartments spread over the entire ship. We have a 16-bed hospital with all the facilities such as laboratory, CT scan, ultrasonography, X-ray as well as the blood transfusion department and two dental chairs and dental treatment facilities.”
  • “This is the first-ever CT scan machine in warship as well as any ships related to India. This is the first time we have installed a CT scan machine over offload platforms,”.
  • The Medical Officer on Vikrant highlighted the facility will be able to cater to all 1,600 sea warriors on the ship.

Indian Army Chief Gen Pande To Visit To Nepal From Sep 4

  • Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande will visit Nepal on September 4 and would remain in the Himalayan nation for the next five days.
  • Last year, Nepali Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Prabhu Ram Sharma visited India from November 9 to 12 at the invitation of former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane.
  • The India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950 forms the bedrock of the special relations that exist between India and Nepal.
  • Nepal shares border with 5 Indian states- Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar. Hence an important point of cultural and economic exchange.
