Defence Secretary Reviews Preparations For DefExpo 2022

  • Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar comprehensively reviewed the preparations of the forthcoming DefExpo 2022 during the Apex Committee meeting at New Delhi on September 24, 2022. Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat Shri Pankaj Kumar and other senior officers of the state government as well as the Ministry of Defence attended the meeting.
  • The 12th edition of DefExpo is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat between October 18-22, 2022 in a first-ever four-venue format which promises to engage the public and inspire them to join the Aerospace and Defence manufacturing sector; for ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in Defence. During the meeting, the Defence Secretary was briefed on the arrangements by the multiple stakeholders that are being made for the biennial event. Dr Ajay Kumar urged the officials to strive towards making DefExpo22 a grand success with focus on business and export promotion of indigenous defence platforms and products.
  • The DefExpo 2022 was earlier scheduled from March 10-14, 2022 and was postponed due to logistical challenges being faced by participants at that stage. The new dates (October 18-22, 2022) were announced on August 08, 2022. The forthcoming edition is the first-ever edition exclusively for Indian companies. For DefExpo 2022, Indian companies, Indian subsidiaries of Foreign OEMs, Division of a company registered in India, and Exhibitor having a Joint Venture with an Indian company will be considered as Indian participants.
  • The theme of DefExpo 2022 is ‘Path to Pride’ and in semblance with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to transform India into a strong and self-reliant nation by supporting, showcasing and forging partnerships for the Indian Aerospace and Defence manufacturing sectors with Indian as well as global customers. The aim is to showcase the might of the domestic defence industry which is now powering the ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ resolve of the Government and the nation at large.
  • The exhibition will also host the 2nd edition of the India-Africa Defence Dialogue (IADD), with invites extended to 53 African countries. A separate Indian Ocean Region plus (IOR+) conclave with the participation of approximately 40 countries is also on the anvil.

Combined Maritime Forces Naval Ex

  • INS Sunayna entered Port Victoria for OTR and participation in Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) led training activities from 24-27 Sep 22.
  • Cdr Siddharth Raut, Captain of INS Sunayna presented the crest to Cd’A Vikram Grewal on board the Indian Naval Ship visiting Port Victoria as part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
  • Combined Maritime Forces launched a two-week mission in the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles with other international organizations Sept. 18 to strengthen regional collaboration and enhance operational readiness.
  • The Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) is a multinational maritime partnership, which exists to uphold the Rules-Based International Order (RBIO) by countering illicit non-state actors on the high seas and promoting security, stability, and prosperity across approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, which encompass some of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

INS Satpura Showcases Her Prowess During ‘Ex Kakadu’ In Australia

  • India’s indigenously designed and built naval ship INS Satpura has showcased her prowess during the ongoing multinational Exercise Kakadu-2022, hosted by the Royal Australian Navy.
  • INS Satpura and P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft reached Darwin in Australia on September 12 to participate in the exercise. “The ship participated in various anti-submarine warfare exercises, anti-ship warfare exercises, maneuvers and has also showcased her precise target destruction capability during gun firing exercises”.
  • INS Satpura is an indigenously designed and built, 6000 tonne guided missile stealth frigate. The ship is a frontline unit of the Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam and is currently on one of the longest deployments by the Indian Navy in the 75th year of India’s Independence.
  • Exercise Kakadu 2022 or KA22 held in Darwin, Australia on 12th September 2022.
  • More than 30 aircraft and around 3000 personnel from more than 20 countries participated in Exercise Kakadu.
  • KA22 is held by Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and supported by Royal Australian Air Force.
  • The exercise is the RAN’s flagship biennial regional international engagement activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Exercise, Kakadu 2020 was cancelled.
  • The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, and Commander of the Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Jonathan Earley, welcomed the personnel participating in Exercise Kakadu 2022.
  • The theme for this year’s Exercise Kakadu 2022 is ‘Partnership, Leadership, Friendship’.

Russia Backs India, Brazil For Permanent Membership In UNSC        

  • Russia voiced its support for India and Brazil as “worthy candidates” for permanent membership in the UN Security Council, calling them “key international actors.” During the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday expressed his support for India, becoming a permanent member of the Security Council.
  • At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
  • India’s tenure at the Council will end in December when the country will also preside as President of the powerful UN organ for the month.
  • The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution. There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
  • Later, addressing a press conference at UN headquarters on September 24, 2022, he was asked why he mentioned only India and Brazil for permanent membership and not South Africa.

Indian Army Will Purchase 47,627 Armoured Vests That Can Stop 7.62 mm Bullets     

  • In November of this year, the Indian Army would send out a request for proposals to vendors for the supply of 47,627 bulletproof vests for its frontline troops. The bulletproof vests must comprise 60% indigenous materials.
  • Indian Army’s listing of requirements, the jackets have to be able to defend a soldier from hard steel-core bullets fired from a distance of 10 metres as well as 7.62 mm armor-piercing rifle ammunition.
  • The fabric of the bulletproof jacket must have the same characteristics as the Indian Army camouflage pattern, particularly resistance to fading when exposed to sunshine and washing. It also needs to be water and flame-resistant.
  • The weight of the armoured clothing should not surpass 11 kg. It ought to be created to be worn as a jacket. The bulletproof jackets must be modular and cover the upper body to protect the user’s throat, chest, sides, groyne, and back. They must also be able to be adjusted depending on the perceived threat level.
