Delivery Of The Second Ship Of Project 15B Y 12705
- Y 12705 (Mormugao), the second ship of Project 15B stealth-guided missile destroyers being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), was delivered to the Indian Navy on 24 Nov 22. The contract for four ships of Project 15B was signed on 28 January 2011.
- This Project is a follow-on of the Kolkata class (Project 15A) destroyers commissioned in the last decade and the lead ship of the Project – INS Visakhapatnam has already been commissioned into the Indian Navy on 21 Nov 21.
- The ship is 163 metres long and 17 metres wide, displaces 7400 tonnes when fully loaded and has a maximum speed of 30 knots. Apart from myriad indigenous equipment in the ‘Float’ and ‘Move’ categories, the destroyer is also installed with under-mentioned major indigenous weapons. The overall indigenous content of the project is approx. 75%.
- Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (BEL, Bangalore
- BrahMos Surface-to-Surface Missiles (BrahMos Aerospace, New Delhi)
- Indigenous Torpedo Tube Launchers (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai)
- Anti-Submarine Indigenous Rocket Launchers (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai)
- 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (BHEL, Haridwar)
- The ship had sailed out for her maiden sea sortie on 19 Dec 21 to coincide with the Goa Liberation Day and the ship has now been delivered. The delivery of Mormugao is an affirmation of the impetus being given by the Government of India and the Indian Navy towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ as part of the celebration of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The early induction of the destroyer, almost 03 months prior to the contractual date, despite the COVID challenges, is a tribute to the collaborative efforts of a large number of stakeholders and would enhance the maritime prowess of the country in the Indian Ocean Region.

IAF Set To Place Rs 1,400 Cr Order For New Age Missiles To Destroy Enemy Radars
- In a major push to induct indigenously developed weapon systems, the Indian Air Force has moved a proposal worth over Rs 1,400 crore to the government for acquiring Rudram next-generation anti-radiation missiles (NGARM) to search and destroy enemy radar locations.
- The next-generation anti-radiation missiles have already been tested by the Indian Air Force from its Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft fleet and can destroy enemy radar locations during conflicts, they said.
- The NGARM can be fired from IAF fighters like the Sukhoi-30 and the Mirage-2000. It is accurate and has been developed with the capability to even track a radar system even if it is not operating.
- NGARM is India’s first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile that has a speed of Mach two or twice the speed of sound.
Lt Gen Asim Munir Named Pakistan’s New Army Chief
- Lt Gen Asim Munir was on Thursday appointed as the new chief of army staff (COAS) of Pakistan, ending weeks of intense speculation and political tussle in the country.
- Munir was among those in Pakistan who oversaw the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, according to Tilak Devasher, a member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) and who retired as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat.
- New COAS (Chief of Army Staff) Lt Gen Munir will be Pakistan’s 17th army chief since the nation’s birth in 1947. That compares with about 30 prime ministers during the same period.
- He is from the Frontier Force Regiment, and has led the nation’s elite spy agencies- the Inter-Services Intelligence that focuses on security and military intelligence.
- He has served under Bajwa’s direct command in the often-troubled northern areas that border Afghanistan, China and India.
- Imran Khan had removed Munir as ISI chief within eight months of his appointment and replaced him with an officer considered close to him.
- Lt Gen Munir was due for retirement on November 27. But now with his appointment as army chief, he will serve for another three years.
In 2023, Bengaluru Will Host The 14th Edition Of Aero India
- The 14th edition of Aero India will be held in Bengaluru by the Defence Exhibition Organisation in 2023. The dates for Asia’s largest airshow have not yet been formally announced, but it is typically held in February. The show is expected to take place at the Air Force Station in Yelahanka in Bengaluru. The airshow has been held at this location since 1996.
- In the past, there have been speculations that the airshow would be moved out of Bengaluru and that it would be held in Uttar Pradesh.
- The Ministry of Defence (MoD), breaking away from the long standing tradition of holding the Air Force Day in New Delhi, this year organised the Air Force Day in Chandigarh. MoD has also moved next year’s Army Day parade from the national capital to Bengaluru.
