Government appoints Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)

  • The Government has decided to appoint Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who shall also function as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs with effect from the date of his assumption of charge and until further orders. In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan had held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East India.
  • Born on 18th May 1961, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In the rank of Maj General, the officer had commanded an Infantry Division in the critical Baramula sector in the Northern Command.
  •  Later as Lt General, he commanded a corps in the North East and subsequently went to become the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 and held the charge until his retirement from the service in May 2021.
  • In addition to these command appointments, the officer also tenanted important staff appointments including the charge of Director General of Military Operations. Earlier, the officer had also served as a United Nations mission to Angola. The officer superannuated from the Indian Army on 31 May 2021. Even after his retirement from the Army, he continued to contribute to national security and strategic matters.
  • For his distinguished and illustrious service in the Army, Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

196th Gunners Day

  • All the Artillery units and formations of Southern Command celebrated 196th Gunners Day on 28 September 2022. The date 28 September has a special significance in the annals of the history of the Regiment of Artillery because 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery was raised on 28 September 1827.
  • On the occasion of 196th Gunners Day, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at NWM by the Regiment of Artillery. Honorary Colonel Commandant, Director General of Artillery & Colonel Commandants of the Regiment of Artillery laid wreaths & paid homage to the Bravehearts.

Why is Gunners Day celebrated?

  • The first recorded use of artillery in India is in the Battle of Adoni in 1368. In the Deccan, the Bahmani kings under the leadership of Mohammad Shah Bahmani used a train of artillery against the Vijayanagar king.
  • 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery was established on 28 September 1827 as the 8th Company of Golandaz Battalion, Bombay Foot Artillery. Presently it is part of 57 Field Regiment. Thus, September 28 is celebrated as ‘Gunners Day’.

  • “Indian Army is also progressing the development of indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, commonly known as ATAGS, and Mounted Gun Systems (MGS)“.
  • An influx of indigenously more advanced Pinaka weapon systems is in the offing where six more regiments have been contracted and delivery would commence soon.
  • Dhanush Gun Systems has been inducted and operationalized in High Altitude along Northern Borders. Dhanush gun is an electronically and mechanically upgraded version of the Bofors gun and the first regiment inducted along Northern borders after extensive validation.
  • Sharang gun is also going for enhancement of 130 mm gun system and with a successful up-gunned gun with better range, accuracy and consistency corroborating Indigenous Defence Capability.
  • ATAGS gun is in the advanced stage as user trials have been conducted successfully and left with few procedural trails.

Centre Declares PFI ‘Unlawful Association’ For 5 Years       

  • The Central Government on Tuesday declared the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates or fronts as an unlawful association with immediate effect for a period of five years.
  • “PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts operate openly as a socio-economic, educational and political organization but, they have been pursuing a secret agenda to radicalize a particular section of the society working towards undermining the concept of democracy and show sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority and constitutional set up of the country,” said the government notification.
  • The Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associates or affiliates or fronts have been found to be involved in serious offences, including terrorism and its financing, targeted gruesome killings, disregarding the constitutional set-up of the country, disturbing public order etc. which are prejudicial to the integrity, security and sovereignty of the country.
  • Therefore, the Ministry of Home Affairs found it necessary to curb the nefarious activities of the organization and has hence declared the Popular Front of India (PFI) along with its associates or affiliates or fronts including Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala as an “unlawful association” under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

INS Sunayna participates in Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) 

  • INS Sunayna participated in the capacity-building exercise Operation Southern Readiness conducted by CMF at Seychelles from 24-27 Sep 22. The Indian Navy was welcomed to the CMF by Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, US NAVCENT. This is the maiden participation of an Indian Navy ship in CMF exercise.
  • As part of the interactive sessions attended by representatives of the participating countries, a training lecture on Maritime Domain Awareness was conducted by the Indian Navy. A live demonstration of Visit Board Search & Seizure operations was also conducted onboard HMS Montrose led by the Seychelles Special forces.
  • The event was coordinated as part of the Distinguished Visitor’s demonstration and witnessed by Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, the Hon’ble President of the Republic of Seychelles and senior officials of member countries of CMF. The participation of the Indian Navy in the joint exercise was highly appreciated.

Indian Navy’s P8I Aircraft Participates In Exercise Kakadu In Australia’s Darwin

  • The Indian Navy’s Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft P8I participated in the Multinational Maritime Exercise Kakadu 2022, which is hosted by Royal Australian Navy in Darwin, where 34 aircraft from over 20 nations were also there.
  • It is pertinent to mention that the event was held from September 12 to 25, according to the statement released by MOD. The maiden participation of the P8I provided an enhanced exposure to the aircrew, augmenting the understanding of the varied nuances of collaborative Anti-Submarine and Anti-Surface Warfare operations in a complex multi-threat scenario.
