India Set To Be Part Of 17-Nation “Pitch Black” Exercise In Australia

  • India will be part of a mega air combat exercise in Australia this month that is set to witness the participation of around 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel from 17 countries.
  • India’s participation in the exercise, “Pitch Black”, has been confirmed by the Australian government.
  • The exercise is scheduled to take place from August 19 to September 6.
  • In June 2020, the two countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership and signed a landmark deal for reciprocal access to military bases for logistics support.
  • “International participation in Exercise Pitch Black, from within the Indo-Pacific region and further abroad, provides all nations’ personnel with experience in working with aircraft, systems and work practices, in northern Australia’s unique environment.
  • The Mutual Logistics Support Agreement (MLSA) allows the militaries of the two countries to use each other’s bases for repair and replenishment of supplies, besides facilitating scaling up of overall defence cooperation.
  • The Australian Navy was part of the Malabar naval exercise hosted by India in November 2020 as well as last year.

J&K: Indian Army Performs Floatation Exercise

  • The Indian Army, on August 2, carried out a floatation exercise using the infantry Combat Vehicles in the Chenab river in J&K. The floatation exercise with tanks and armoured vehicles was performed in a massive display of the Indian Army’s might to respond in every situation, especially along the international border with Pakistan.
    • It is important to note that the Chenab river flows from the Chenab valley in Jammu and Kashmir and then crosses the international border to flow into the plains of Pakistan’s Punjab.
    • The ICVs have been developed jointly by India’s DRDO and the TATA group. The initiative to develop indigenous vehicles for the forces gives strength to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

Asia’s 2 Biggest Militaries Are Both Getting New Aircraft Carriers

  • On June 17, China officially launched its newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, Fujian. Fujian is China’s third aircraft carrier and the first to be totally designed and built domestically. It symbolizes the Chinese military’s rapid expansion and is seen as a potential rival to the US Navy’s nuclear-powered supercarriers.
  • But China isn’t the only Asian country getting a new carrier this year. In the final days of July, India’s navy took delivery of its new carrier, Vikrant.
  • Fujian- A Type 003-class carrier, Fujian is about 1,035 feet long and displaces about 80,000 tons fully loaded. This makes it slightly larger than its predecessors, the Type 001 Liaoning and Type 002 Shandong, which were about 1,000 feet long and displaced 60,000 to 70,000 tons.
  • All three of China’s carriers use conventional engines rather than nuclear reactors, limiting the power they can generate and the time they can spend at sea.
  • Vikrant was officially launched in 2013 and is expected to be commissioned on August 15, but it won’t be India’s first or only carrier.
  • India had former British carriers in service from 1961 to 1997 and from 1987 to 2016, and INS Vikramaditya, a modified Kiev-class carrier purchased from Russia and commissioned in 2013, is the Indian navy’s current flagship.
  • At 860 feet long and with a full displacement of about 45,000 tons, Vikrant is the biggest warship India has ever constructed. It was designed and built by India’s largest shipbuilder, Cochin Shipyard Limited, and 76% of its components were developed domestically, according to India’s Defense Ministry.

Hellfire R9X: The Missile That Turned Al-Qaeda Leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri Into Ashes

  • The Hellfire R9X missile, an anti-tank weapon used by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the recent killing of Al Qaeda chief and key plotter of the 9/11 terrorist attack, Ayman al Zawahiri has been used to kill a few high-profile terrorists before being used to eliminate Zawahiri on July 31 in Afghanistan.
  • Hellfire R9X missile is basically a modified version of the renowned Hellfire missile which was an anti-tank weapon developed in the 1980s and was later modified numerous times, especially after the 9/11 attacks, to target individuals.
  • The missile is designed in a way that it can shove more than 100 pounds of metal in order to kill its target, be it a car or building.
  • Zawahiri took over the leadership of Al-Qaeda after the US Forces hunted down Osama bin Laden in Jalalabad of Pakistan.

What is the Hellfire 9X?

  • Also called the “ninja bomb,” the missile has become the US weapon of choice for killing leaders of extremist groups while avoiding civilian casualties.
  • The missile is fired from a Predator drone. It has no warhead, but deploys six blades which fly in at high speed, crush and slice the targeted person.
  • This is the reason why it’s called the “flying ginsu”, after the 1980 TV commercial for Japanese kitchen knives that would cut cleanly through aluminum cans and remain perfectly sharp.
  • The R9X variant of Hellfire is used only in specific circumstances, particularly when a terrorist leader has been pinpointed. It is intended to limit damage compared to typical missiles by reducing the risk of killing innocent civilians around the target.
