Weapon Systems Branch in Indian Air Force     

  • Government has approved the creation of a new branch, called the Weapon Systems (WS) branch. The creation of WS branch would entail unification of all weapon system operators under one entity dedicated to the operational employment of all ground-based and specialist airborne weapon systems.
  • The branch would encompass operators in four specialised streams of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Weapon System Operators in twin/multi-crew aircraft. The branch will contribute immensely by enhancing the war-fighting fighting capability of IAF.
  • During the celebration in Chandigarh, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari said, “This will essentially be for manning of four specialised streams of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface to Air Missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Weapon System Operators in twin and multi-crew aircraft.”

73rd Raising Day Of Territorial Army   

  • The 73rd Raising Day of Territorial Army was celebrated across the country on 09 Oct 2022 to commemorate its raising by the first Governor General Shri C Rajagopalachari on this day in 1949.  Lieutenant General Preet Mohinder Singh, Director General of the Territorial Army (TA) paid tribute to the fallen heroes of the Territorial Army by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial.
  • The celebrations commenced on 07 October with tree plantation at Bhatti Mines in Delhi, wherein 10,000 saplings were planted. The Ecological task forces of TA have so far planted more than 8.5 Crore trees in various parts of the country. The officers, families and Veer Naris of the Territorial Army called on Smt Droupadi Murmu, Hon’ble President & Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces on 8th October. In addition, all ranks and families voluntarily participated in a Blood Donation Camp at 124 Infantry Battalion (TA) SIKH in Delhi.
  • The Territorial Army has a number of Infantry and Engineer units affiliated to various regiments of the Indian Army, apart from ‘Home and Hearth’ battalions based on the concept of ‘Sons of Soil’. The Territorial Army also has 10 Ecological Battalions working for the restoration of the environment in the country by carrying out afforestation in rugged and inhospitable terrain, reviving wetlands, restoring water bodies and contributing to the Clean Ganga project. TA Battalions also perform specialist tasks as part of Indian Railways and Oil Sector Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

India To Host UNSC Members For Special Meeting On Counter-terrorism On Oct 28, 29

  • India will host diplomats of the United Nations Security Council along with other member states for a key meeting of counterterrorism Committee in Mumbai and New Delhi on October 28-29.
  • India is currently the Chair of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee for the year 2022.
  • During a press conference on Saturday in New York, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said that UN CTC members will pay homage to the victims of horrific 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
  • She also said that the special meeting of the UNSC CTC on “Countering the Use of New and Emerging Technologies for Terrorist Purposes” will be held on October 28 and in New Delhi on October 29.
  • “Terror constitutes the most serious threat to the international community,” she said and added, “members of the UN Counter-terror committee will pay homage to victims of 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.”
  • India is set to host a UN Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting in Mumbai and Delhi which will focus on the rapid developments of 3 significant technologies used by terrorists -the Internet and social media, terrorism financing, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS), she said.
  • It will provide opportunities to discuss existing and evolving threats, the deployment of new and emerging technology to counter those threats, continuing challenges, and good practices, as well as a range of related human rights and gender considerations.
  • With the prevalence of technology and the rapid rise in digitization, the use of new and emerging technologies in counterterrorism is a topic of growing interest among the Member States, policymakers, and researchers, particularly in the context of the increasing role played by technology in terrorism and counter-terrorism.
  • This is addressed by the Security Council in a number of counter-terrorism-related resolutions, most recently resolution 2617 (2021), which explicitly cited “emerging technologies”.
  • Mindful of the increasing threat posed by the misuse of new and emerging technologies, the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee has decided to hold a Special Meeting on this theme, with the support of its Executive Directorate (CTED).

Indian Air Force New Combat Uniform               

  • A new pattern of combat uniform of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was unveiled at the Air Force Day parade in Chandigarh Saturday in the presence of Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.
  • The digital pattern combat uniform, which has been designed keeping in mind the operational tasks of the IAF, includes new pattern of boots, a combat T-shirt, a new web belt, and a new pattern of caps and turbans.
  • Besides the new pattern, the uniform will have a different, more breathable, lightweight fabric and design that will increase the comfort and efficiency of personnel.
  • As per reports, ergonomic fitting is a feature that allows both male and female ground duty personnel to maximize their operational capability.
  • The all-terrain, all-weather uniform can be mass-produced which will also help manufacturers cut production costs.
  • The Air Force’s new combat uniform is thought to have taken some ideas from the Army’s new digital camouflaged combat uniform, which came out earlier this year.

INS Vikrant Heads For Aviation Trials                   

  • The aircraft carrier INS Vikrant left the Cochin Shipyard dock on Friday, more than a month after being commissioned into the Indian Navy. According to Navy sources, the first indigenously developed and built 43,000-tonne aircraft carrier will begin the first of a series of operational-level trials.
  • The warship is expected to go through deck integration trials with fixed-wing aircraft, which will also involve the use of the Aviation Facility Complex (AFC). During a pre-commissioning media interaction on August 24, Navy Vice-Chief of Staff Vice-Admiral S.N. Ghormade stated that the warship would be battle worthy by the middle of next year. The MiG-29k fighter landing trials are scheduled to begin in November. According to Navy sources, the aviation facility system was purchased from Russia.
  • INS Vikrant can operate with18 Mig 29s, a dozen Russian-made Kamovs, and newly inducted MH60 Romeo helicopters. The aircraft carrier, which is also outfitted with surface-to-air missiles, has a top speed of 28 knots, a range of 7,500 nautical miles, and can accommodate 16,000 officers and sailors in specialized cabins.
