IAF To Induct Women Officers To Fly Light Combat Helicopter Fleet

  • Amid the growing strength of women officers in the IAF, the force is now planning to induct female pilots into the Light Combat Helicopter fleet.
  • “The fleet will have women officers flying the Light Combat Helicopters,” IAF officials said when asked if some pilots would be flying the choppers named Prachand by Defence Minister.
  • The women officers are already flying the ALH Dhruv and other helicopters in the fleet. They would be flying the LCH fleet also and women officers are in the process of being identified for this, they said.
  • IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari is in favour of opening all avenues for female officers and the IAF is the first force to induct women in combat roles, they said.
  • The IAF is also going to induct women officers in the Agniveer recruitment scheme who would be joining men as the personnel below officer rank for the first time.
  • This is the first time that the Air Force has announced women candidates joining the force at the personnel below officer Ranks level. The Navy and Army had made announcements of inducting women.
  • While announcing the scheme for inducting females as soldiers, Chaudhari said, “We as an organisation are gender agnostic and recognise merit and performance above everything else. A high ratio of women officers in the IAF is testimony to our commitment to providing equal opportunity and a level playing field for every individual irrespective of gender.”

Next Month, India To Get 3rd Squadron Of S-400 air defence system

  • Deliveries for the third operational squadron of Russia’s S-400 air defence system are expected to arrive in India next month. “Components for the S-400 will begin arriving from Russia in November,” according to defence establishment sources. Russia has so far provided India with two S-400 squadrons. Russia dispatched the second squadron after the conflict with Ukraine began in February.
  • One S-400 squadron has been deployed in the north in Punjab, and the second in the east around the Chicken’s Neck corridor, a vulnerable stretch that connects the north-eastern states to the rest of India, according to officials. “The S-400 will be deployed in areas that we believe are vulnerable and must be protected.” The S-400 will be used to reinforce those positions, according to the sources. According to an official, the third squadron of S-400s will be deployed in the north, with one of the sites possibly being in Rajasthan.
  • The S-400, one of the most advanced air defence missile systems capable of bringing down enemy fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, and incoming missiles from a distance of up to 400 kilometres, is critical for India right now due to the ongoing military standoff with China. The S-400 is also significant because the Indian Air Force’s fighter squadrons have shrunk to 31 from the sanctioned strength of 42.

IAF To Outsource More Mi-17 Overhaul Task To Private Companies

  • The number of IAF Mi-17 helicopters to be overhauled in the country has nearly tripled, prompting the Air Force to call on the civilian aviation establishment to extensive service manpower requirements.
  • “The overhaul task allotted to the Air Force by the Ministry of Defence for the existing planning year is 35 helicopters, compared to 11 for the previous planning year,” an IAF officer said. Mi-17s are overhauled at No. 3 Base Repair Depot (3 BRD) in Chandigarh.
  • As according IAF sources, 3 BRD overhauls roughly 8,000 mechanical rotables and components per year, involving nearly 4 lakh man-hours. “The amplitude of the task requires over 350 personnel, including superintendents, while the present level available is significantly less,”
  • The IAF issued an Expression of Interest earlier this year, inviting the industry to take part in the Mi-17 helicopter overhaul process. The task at hand was to overhaul 15 helicopters per year for two years.
  • The IAF operates three Mi-17 variants of Soviet/Russian origin, including the latest Mi-17 V5, Mi-17 1V, and older versions, which serve as the backbone of its medium-lift rotary component.
