16-yr-old Kaamya Karthikeyan becomes youngest Indian to scale Mt Everest
- Sixteen-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan claims to be the youngest Indian and second-youngest girl in the world to scale Mount Everest.
- The 16-year-old said she was 7 when she took her first trek in Uttarakhand.
- A class 12 student of Navy Children School, Mumbai, at 16, Karthikeyan successfully summitted Mt Everest on May 20, 2024, with her father, Cdr S Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy. S Karthikeyan said “it is a “proud moment for the country.”
- Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point. Its elevation of 8,848.86 m was most recently established in 2020 by the Chinese and Nepali authorities.
Delivery Of 25t Bollard Pull Tug, Baljeet
- 25T Bollard Pull (BP) Tug, Baljeet has been delivered to Indian Navy (IN) on 30 May 24 in presence of RAdm Sandeep Mehta, ACWP&A. This Tug is a proud flag bearer of “Make in India” initiative of Govt of India.
- Contract for construction and delivery of three 25T BP Tugs was concluded with M/s Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd (M/s SSPL), an MSME, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative of the Government of India. This Tug is being built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The availability of Tug will provide impetus to Operational commitments of IN by facilitating assistance to Naval ships and submarines during berthing and un-berthing, turning and maneuvering in confined waters. The Tug will also provide afloat firefighting assistance to ships alongside, at anchorage and will also have capability to conduct limited Search and Rescue Operations.
Steel-cutting Ceremony For First NG OPV
- The steel-cutting ceremony for the first Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) took place at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai in the presence of Indian Coast Guard (lCG) officials on May 31, 2024.
- The Ministry of Defence had, in December 2023, signed a contract with MDL for the procurement of six NGOPVs for the lCG at a total cost of Rs 1,614.89 crore. The project aims to bolster the capabilities in coastal and offshore patrol, safeguard maritime zones, and enhance operational efficiency.
- The NGOPVs are equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment. The vessel is powered by two diesel engines which are capable of achieving a maximum continuous speed of 23 knots and cover a distance of up to 5,000 nautical miles.
U.S.-China Defence Chiefs Come Face-To-Face
- In a rare face-to-face meeting, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and China’s Defence Minister Adm. Dong Jun held pivotal talks in Singapore. The discussions, marked as “positive and constructive,” covered crucial topics like Taiwan, South China Sea, and the Ukraine crisis.
- This meeting comes just days after the US threatened China over its support for Russia. Watch to uncover the significant details and implications of this high-stakes encounter.
- US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Saturday the Indo-Pacific region remained a “priority” for Washington, saying the United States was secure “only if Asia is”.
- The United States is seeking to strengthen alliances and partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly with the Philippines, as it seeks to counter China’s growing military might and influence.
Agnikul Launches Agnibaan With India’s First 3D-Printed Rocket Engine
- In a significant milestone for India’s private space industry, Agnikul Cosmos successfully launched its SOrTeD mission, a single-stage launch vehicle demonstration powered by a semi-cryogenic 3D-printed engine.
- The mission, which lasted approximately two minutes, marked a major achievement for the company and the country in the development of indigenous space technology.
- ISRO congratulated the Chennai-based space start-up, terming the launch “a major milestone”.
- The SOrTeD mission, which was initially scheduled to launch on April 7 but was postponed due to technical glitches, finally took off from India’s first private launchpad, ALP-01, located
- at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
- The mission featured a 6.2-meter-tall single-stage launch vehicle with an elliptical nose cone and was equipped with advanced avionics architecture and autopilot software developed in-house.
- The Agnilet engine, the world’s first single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic rocket engine, powered the vehicle. The mission included a series of precise manoeuvres, including a pitch-over manoeuvre and wind biasing, before splashing down in the Bay of Bengal.
