ICG Rescues Fisherman With Head Injury Onboard IFB St. Francis
- The ICG successfully executed a daring night rescue operation to save a fisherman who had sustained serious head injury. The fisherman had a bad fall onboard the Indian Fishing Boat St Francis due to rough sea conditions about 130 km west of Veraval, Gujarat on the night of May 01, 2024.
- ICG received a distress call from the Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Sub Center in Veraval. Responding swiftly, ICG Ship C-153, which was on a surveillance mission at the time, altered its course to aid in the medical evacuation. The ICG successfully evacuated the injured fisherman from the IFB St Francis and promptly transferred him to a medical facility in Veraval for further treatment.
- The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of India with jurisdiction over its territorial waters including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. It was started on 1 February 1977 and formally established on 18 August 1978 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India. It operates under the Ministry of Defence.

Indonesia to co-chair 7th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee
- The seventh Joint Defence Cooperation Committee meeting between India and Indonesia will be held in New Delhi on May 03, 2024. The meeting will be co-chaired by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and Secretary General of MoD, Indonesia Air Marshal (Retd.) Donny Ermawan Taufanto, MDS.
- The India-Indonesia friendship, which was elevated to the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, has widened the scope of bilateral relations to allow for new collaboration in the realm of defence industry, science and technology etc. The defence relations form a significant pillar to this growing partnership.
- Defence engagements between the two nations have diversified to include wide-ranging contacts between the services, military-to-military exchanges, high-level visits, capacity building and training programmes, cooperation in UN Peace Keeping, ship visits and bilateral exercises.
- Local Currency Trade between India-Indonesia
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies (the Indian Rupee (INR) and the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)) for cross-border transactions.
- Commercial Relations: Indonesia has emerged as the second largest trading partner of India in the ASEAN region.
- Bilateral trade has increased from USD 4.3 billion in 2005-06 to USD 38.84 billion in 2022-23.

India Lodges Protest With China Over Its Infra Development In Shaksgam Valley
- India has lodged a strong protest with China for carrying out construction activities in the Shaksgam valley, in an “illegal” attempt to alter the situation on the ground.
- MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday that the Shaksgam valley is a part of India and New Delhi never accepted the so-called China-Pakistan boundary pact of 1963 through which Islamabad “unlawfully” attempted to cede the area to Beijing.
- “We have consistently conveyed our rejection of the same. We have registered our protest with the Chinese side against illegal attempts to alter facts on the ground,” Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.
EU Announces $1 Bn In Aid For Lebanon
- EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday announced $1 billion in aid for Lebanon during a visit to the crisis-hit country and urged it to tackle illegal migration to the bloc.
- The European Union has already agreed deals with Tunisia, Mauritania and other countries to stem flows of irregular migrants.
- “I can announce a financial package of $1 billion for Lebanon that would be available from this year until 2027,” von der Leyen said, adding that “we want to contribute to Lebanon’s socio-economic stability”.
- Lebanon’s economy collapsed in late 2019, turning the country into a launchpad for migrants, with Lebanese joining Syrians and Palestinian refugees making perilous voyages bound for Europe.
INDO-US Defence Collaboration
- The Indo-US joint working group, operating under the Defence Tech and Trade Initiative convened for a pivotal two-day meeting in New Delhi to bolster defence collaboration between the two nations, the Indian Air Force said.
- The meeting held on Monday and Tuesday was led by IAF Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit and American Brig Gen Joel W Safranek, the co-chairs of the group, the discussions centred on leveraging the respective strengths of both partner nations to enhance defence cooperation and co-production.
- During the intensive sessions, key officials, including Brig Gen Joel W Safranek and Air Vice Marshal George Thomas, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Plans), delved into strategic plans aimed at deepening bilateral defence ties. The focus was on overcoming challenges through partnership and cooperative research, in line with the objectives set forth by the DTTI mechanism established in 2012.
