Greek Military Chief To Visit India Next Week

  • India is expanding defence footprints in the Mediterranean region with General Dimitris Houpis, the Chief of the General Staff of the Greek Armed Forces, planning a visit to India next week following the elevation of their bilateral relations to a ‘Strategic Partnership’.
  • During the visit the two countries will sign a Military Cooperation Program which includes exercises and joint activities with personnel from all three branches—the Army, Navy, and Air Force— as well as the Special Forces.
  • The focus will be on the Middle East, Greece’s participation in the European Operation Aspides in the Red Sea – an area of vital interest to New Delhi – cooperation with the Indian Navy, Ukraine and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
  • The military cooperation program will start being implemented in the coming months with Greek fighters heading to India for the first time. Greece’s participation in Tarang Shakti has reportedly been locked in and in September four aircraft are to take part in one of the largest air exercises on Asian soil.

‘Birds Of Goodness’ Executes 25th Humanitarian Aid Airdrop In North Gaza

  • The Joint Operations Command of the Ministry of Defence announced the implementation of the 25th airdrop of humanitarian and relief aid as part of the “Birds of Goodness” operation.
  • The airdrop was carried out over inaccessible, isolated areas in the northern Gaza Strip via four aircraft carrying 80 tonnes of food and relief aid, bringing the total amount of aid airdrops to 1401 tonnes since the beginning of the operation.
  • The Birds of Goodness operation is part of “Operation Chivalrous Knight 3” to support Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

ICG Rescues 27 Bangladeshi Fishermen

  • In a swift operation, ICG rescued 27 Bangladeshi fishermen on 04 April 24, stranded  on their fishing boat at sea. At about 1130 hrs on April 4, 2024, Indian Coast Guard Ship Amogh during patrol at Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Border Line, sighted a Bangladeshi fishing boat Sagar II, adrift inside Indian waters.
  • ICG ship launched boarding team to investigate. During investigation it was revealed that the boat had a steering gear breakdown for the last two days and had been adrift since then, which led to the boat drifting inside Indian waters. The BFB  had 27 crew/fishermen onboard.
  • The operation reflects the commitment of Indian Coast Guard towards safeguarding precious lives at sea against all odds. Such successful Search and Rescue operations will not only strengthen the regional SAR structure but also enhances the international cooperation with neighbouring countries. This is in keeping with the motto of the Indian Coast Guard “VAYAM RAKSHAMAH” which means “WE PROTECT”.

IAF Receives First Indigenous Crash Fire Tender

  • The Indian Air Force said it had recently received the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed Crash Fire Tender (CFT).
  • Manufactured by a Noida-based Indian MSME firm, against a contract worth Rs 291 Cr, the Indian manufacturer ensured the delivery of the CFT within 14 months of contract signing.
  • The Indian Air Force is promoting indigenisation and has procured many made-in-India items to meet its operational requirements.
  • Promoting Make in India in Defence sector has been one of the key focus areas of the Narendra Modi government and multiple steps have been taken in this direction.

Indian Navy Brings 9 Pirates Caught Off Somalia To Mumbai, Hands Over To Local Police

  • All nine pirates involved in piracy were apprehended on Wednesday after Indian Navy ships INS Trishul and INS Sumedha conducted successful anti-piracy operations east of Somalia on 29 March.
  • The operations resulted in the rescue of FV Al Kambar and its crew of 23 Pakistani nationals. “INS Trishul arrived in Mumbai on 3 April and handed over all nine pirates to the local police for further legal action by the Indian laws, specifically the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act 2022,” Indian Navy added.
  • On March 30, 23 Pakistani nationals were rescued from the clutches of Somali pirates during a daring 12-hour-long operation in the Arabian Sea, said the Indian Navy.
  • The rescue unfolded in the early hours of March 29, 2024, when the Indian Navy warship INS Sumedha intercepted the hijacked vessel, FV Al-Kambar, as it was being held captive by pirates. Acting swiftly, INS Sumedha was soon joined by the guided missile frigate INS Trishul to bolster the operation.
  • Utilising their tactical expertise and strategic coordination, Indian naval forces initiated negotiations with the pirates, compelling them to surrender without bloodshed.
  • Following the successful apprehension of the pirates, Indian Naval specialist teams embarked on the FV Al-Kambar to undertake thorough sanitisation and seaworthiness checks.
