Rajnath Singh Addresses Naval Commanders

  • The inaugural session of the three-day naval commanders’ conference saw Singh embarking at sea to witness the Navy’s ability to conduct operations deploying both the aircraft carriers.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday witnessed the combat prowess of aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya in a “twin-carrier” operation in the Arabian Sea and addressed the top naval commanders on the evolving maritime security scenario in view of geo-political upheavals.
  • The Raksha Mantri also spoke about the shift in dealing with the threat perception under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, which is now covering land-based as well as maritime challenges. “Earlier, almost all the governments focused on strengthening land borders, but maritime threats were not given as much importance. In view of the increased movement of our adversaries in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) & the commercial importance of the region, it was necessary to re-assess our threat perception and accordingly re-balance our military resources & strategic attention.
  • Under the Prime Minister’s guidance, we not only re-imagined India’s role in the IOR, but also strengthened it. Due to these efforts, India has today emerged as the first responder and preferred security partner in the IOR,” he said.

Houthis Targeting Merchant Ships In Red Sea: CONS

  • Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar on Tuesday said Houthis are targeting merchant ships belonging to either Israel, the US or the UK in the Red Sea with drones and missiles and the situation is “not very good”.
  • Describing the activities in the Red Sea as “an offshoot of the Israel-Hamas conflict”, the Admiral said the Indian Navy is providing necessary protection primarily to India-flagged ships and also to other vessels that seek assistance.
  • “As far as activities in the Red Sea are concerned, it is an offshoot of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The situation is not very good. The Houthis have been targeting merchant ships…they are actually peaceful ships largely belonging to either Israel, the US or the UK or are Israeli-owned,” the Admiral said.

Indian Army’s New HR Policy Promoting Specialisation

  • With a focus on specialisation, the Indian Army implemented a new Human Resource (HR) policy on 1 January 2024 that allows ranks higher than Lieutenant Colonels to continue working in the field.
  • Earlier, only about 30 to 40 per cent of Lt Colonels would become Colonels as the requirement for them was to assume command positions by leaving their specialisation domains.
  • However, now the Indian Army wants to retain specialist officers in fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), space, Information Technology (IT), nanotechnology, robotics and weapons design, etc.
  • Lt Colonel Prasad Bansod has become the first beneficiary of this new HR policy and has now been promoted to the rank of Colonel while being on deputation with the DRDO’s small arms laboratory.
