Indian Army To Get ‘Tanks in the Air’
- The Indian Army is preparing for the addition of six heavy-duty Apache attack helicopters armed with Stinger air-to-air missiles, Hellfire Longbow air-to-ground missiles, guns, and rockets. This comes as part of the Rs 5,691 crore deal signed with the US in February 2020.
- The delivery of these AH-64E Apache attack choppers, known as “tanks in the air,” will occur in batches between February and June next year.
- IAF has already inducted 22 Apache helicopters under a separate deal worth Rs 13,952 crore signed in September 2015. These helicopters will provide integrated combat aviation support to the Army’s strike corps, according to an officer.
Russia test-fired ICBM From New Nuclear Submarine
- The Russian military on Sunday reported a successful test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile designed to carry nuclear warheads from a new nuclear submarine. The report comes as tensions are soaring between Russia and the West over the fighting in Ukraine.
- Adding to those tensions, President Vladimir Putin last week signed a bill revoking Russia’s ratification of a global nuclear test ban in a move that Moscow said was needed to establish parity with the United States.
- The Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement that the Imperator Alexander III strategic missile cruiser fired the Bulava missile from an underwater position in Russia’s northern White Sea and hit a target in the far-eastern region of Kamchatka.
Crest Unveiling Ceremony Of Indian Navy’s Project 15B Warship “Surat”
- Crest of Indian Navy’s latest, indigenous under-construction, guided missile destroyer, ‘Surat’, is scheduled to be unveiled by Shri Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister of Gujarat in presence of Adm R Hari Kumar, the Chief of the Naval Staff, at a ceremony to be held in the city of Surat on 06 November 2023.
- Amongst the latest frontline ‘Warship Projects’ under construction, the ‘Project 15B’ programme involves construction of four next generation stealth guided missile destroyers, of which ‘Surat’ is the fourth and the last ship. She is presently under construction at the Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Ltd. Mumbai.
- It is a well-known fact that the city of Surat was the most important maritime trade link between India and many other countries from the 16th to the 18th century. The city was also a flourishing centre for ship building activities and the vessels built in Surat, during this period, were especially renowned for their longevity as some ships continued to be in service for more than 100 years.
Maritime Security Meeting Between Indian Navy And Sri Lankan Navy
- The 33rd edition of annual IMBL meeting between the representatives of Navies and Coast Guards of India and Sri Lanka was held onboard INS Sumitra at the Indo – Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line off Point Calimere at Palk Bay.
- During the meeting, attendees from both the Navies and Coast Guard discussed maritime security in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar region, safety of fishermen, measures to curtail trafficking of contraband among other issues.
- Ways and means to enhance existing communication network and timely sharing of information between the two Navies and Coast Guard aiding in timely actions were also discussed at length.
India Offers Philippines 7 Helicopters Amid Manila’s Deteriorating Ties With China
- India is offering the Philippines at least seven helicopters that will be used for the rescue and humanitarian efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard during disasters in the country, President of the Philippines said in an official statement.
- The offer comes amid Manila’s deteriorating ties with China in the South China Sea region.
- Japan is also extending security assistance to the Philippines amid China’s belligerence. On Saturday Japanese PM Fumio Kishida said his country, the Philippines and the United States were cooperating to protect the freedom of the South China Sea as he committed to help enhance Manila’s security capabilities.
