Rajnath Singh Approves Waiver Of Provision For Bro’s Casual Paid Labourers

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for waiver of the provision to complete 179 working days, at the time of accident, for payment of ex-gratia lump sum compensation to Casual Paid Labourers (CPLs) working in Border Roads Organisation (BRO)/General Engineering Reserve Force (GREF).
  • As per the existing instructions, the CPLs, who have worked at least 179 days in BRO, are covered for payment of ex-gratia lump sum compensation of Rs five lakh. Several families of deceased CPLs are deprived of the grant due to this constraint of 179 working days.
  • Considering the cases of deaths occurred/reported during their engagement, the waiver of the condition of minimum 179 working days on humanitarian grounds would be a great reprieve for the families of the CPLs who lose their bread winner while on Government duty and will go a long way in securing their livelihoods.

‘Absolute Victory’: Israeli PM Netanyahu

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a ceasefire demand by Hamas and vowed to press ahead with Israel’s military offensive in Gaza until achieving “absolute victory.”
  • Netanyahu made the comments on Wednesday shortly after meeting the visiting US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, who has been traveling the region in hopes of securing a ceasefire agreement.
  • He ruled out any arrangement that leaves Hamas in full or partial control of Gaza. He also said that Israel is the “only power” capable of guaranteeing security in the long term. Netanyahu also called for the replacement of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
  • President Joe Biden said Hamas’ demands are “a little over the top” but that negotiations will continue. The deadliest round of fighting in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has killed over 27,000 Palestinians, leveled entire neighborhoods, driven the vast majority of Gaza’s population from their homes and pushed a quarter of the population to starvation.

PAC Flays Navy For Delays In Deployment Of Officers For Special Prahari Bal

  • Several fast interception crafts (FICs) of the Indian Navy remained non-operational from 2014 to 2019 due to defective engines for extended periods, a parliamentary committee said in its report on Wednesday.
  • In its report, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) also flayed the Navy, saying it is yet to achieve the complete deployment of officers for the Special Prahari Bal (SPB), despite a significant lapse of 12 years since the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) sanctioned it in February 2009.
  • The SPB is a maritime force envisaged following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack with a primary focus on providing security to all coastal and offshore naval assets by carrying out patrolling through FICs.
  • The formation of the SPB was sanctioned in February 2009 by the CCS with a complement of 1,000 personnel comprising 120 officers, 240 senior sailors and 640 junior sailors to be based at 13 Indian naval ports.
