Indian Army & Indian Navy orders 4 Hermes-900 MALE Drones

  • After acquiring Israeli Heron Mk-2 long-range armed drones, the Indian armed forces have now purchased another medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drone — the Hermes 900 Starliner from Israel.
  • All three services have ordered two drones each using emergency procurement powers granted to the forces.
  • The army and navy have ordered two Elbit Systems-manufactured Hermes 900 drones, while the IAF has ordered two Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)-manufactured Heron Mk2 drones.
  • It is worth noting that the army already operates four Heron Mk2 UAVs, which were ordered in 2021. Two of the army’s Heron Mk2 drones are deployed at Leh in Ladakh, while the other two are deployed in the eastern theater.
  • The deliveries of these UAVs are expected to be completed by next year.
  • India is also working on Project Cheetah — a project aimed at weaponizing, upgrading, and adding satellite communication systems — to hundreds of Israeli Heron and Searcher UAVs already in operation with the armed forces.
  • This project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 21,000 crore.
  • Among these, the study concerning UAVs has concluded, recommending the acquisition of 31 MQ-9B High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs and 155 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAVs.

First INDUS-X Investors Meet Held in Delhi

  • Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) under the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence and US Department of Defence, organised the maiden INDUS-X Investors Meet on 8 November 2023 at New Delhi as a pre-cursor to the 2+2 Indo-US Ministerial Dialogue.
  • The INDUS-X Educational Series (Gurukul) was also launched during the event. The event was coordinated by US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Indus Tech, and mach33.aero (Social Alpha).
  • The first-ever INDUS-X Investors Event evinced the interest of the investors in the start-ups and MSMEs operating in the defence sector and the emerging   opportunities under the INDUS-X initiative.
  • The interactive meet brought all the stakeholders viz Startups/MSMEs, Investors, Incubators, Industry from both sides under one roof to discuss the collaborative agendas and opportunities thereon.

DUBAI AIR SHOW 2023

  • An IAF contingent has landed at the Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai for participation in the biennial Dubai Airshow, scheduled from 13 to 17 November 2023. The IAF contingent comprises two indigenous platforms – the LCA Tejas and the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv.
  • While the Tejas will be part of both, the static and aerial displays during the Airshow; the Sarang Helicopter Display Team will be displaying their formation aerobatics skills.
  • Having participated in the 2021 edition as well, this is the second consecutive occasion for the Tejas and Sarang display teams to enthrall the crowd at the Dubai Airshow.
  • The IAF contingent is being staged by its C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The teams will first perform on the opening ceremony on 13 November 23 and will thereafter share the airspace with other leading aerial display teams of the world.

US Defence Secy Lloyd Austin Departs for India to Attend 5th India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue

  • US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has departed for India from the Joint Base Andrews to participate in the fifth India-US 2+2 Ministerial dialogue to be held here in the national capital on Friday.
  • Following his visit to India, Austin will be travelling to Korea and Indonesia, which will mark his 9th visit to the Indo-Pacific region.
  • As the fifth India-US 2+2 Ministerial dialogue approaches, the defence and the foreign ministers of both countries will take the opportunity to progress the futuristic roadmap for the India-US partnership as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar will welcome US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III for the Fifth India-U.S. 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi.

Israel Introduces New National Centre For Monitoring Drones

  • For the first time in Israel the management of the movement of drones/UAVs throughout the country will be directed through a national control and control centre.
  • The Ministry of Transportation, which leads the national drone project, established a command-and-control centre to manage the national aerial image of drone movement.
  • The centre assists the security and civilian effort in the “Iron Swords” war and also operates drones to identify and locate dropped launches, collect information for the security and rescue forces, and more.
  • The new project aims to qualify the airspace in Israel to support the air traffic of drones for public use, and to support the development and implementation of ground-breaking technologies of the drone industry in Israel and around the world. With the outbreak of the “Iron Swords” war, the project’s activities were adjusted to support the security and rescue forces.
