US Approves Sale of AMRAAM Missiles to Pakistan

The United States has approved the sale of advanced air-to-air missiles to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), further strengthening military cooperation between the two nations. As per a recently notified arms agreement by the US Department of War (formerly the Department of Defence), Pakistan is listed among 35 nations set to receive the AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) by the year 2030.

This deal is believed to be connected to possible upgrades of the PAF’s F-16 fighter aircraft fleet, as AMRAAMs are compatible only with these jets. The same missile type was reportedly used during the 2019 aerial skirmish when an Indian Air Force MiG-21, piloted by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was shot down. The agreement comes on the heels of increasing US-Pakistan engagements, including cooperation in rare earth trade and port development opportunities along the Arabian Sea.

MoD Achieves 650 Defence Innovation Contracts Worth ₹3,000 Crore

India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reached a major achievement under its Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) programme by finalizing around 650 innovation and development contracts worth nearly ₹3,000 crore. These contracts have been granted to Indian start-ups, MSMEs, and individual innovators, marking a strong push toward indigenous defence manufacturing and technological advancement.

Launched in 2018, the iDEX initiative plays a vital role in promoting self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The programme accelerates the development of cutting-edge prototypes and technologies in various defence sectors. This milestone also aligns with the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, which directs that at least 25% of the MoD’s R&D budget should support industry-led innovation. Through initiatives such as the Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC) and iDEX Prime, the ministry continues to identify and develop technologies for deployment by 2026–27.

France Targets 30,000 Indian Students by 2030

France has reiterated its commitment to deepening educational partnerships with India. During the Choose France Tour held across major Indian cities—Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata—Gregor Trumel, Counsellor for Education, Science, and Culture at the French Embassy, announced that France aims to host 30,000 Indian students by 2030.

Currently, about 10,000 Indian students are pursuing higher education in France, with nearly 85% enrolled in management and business schools, mostly within private institutions. Trumel highlighted that Indian student enrolment has shown remarkable growth, recording a 17% increase this year, following a 25% rise two years earlier. The consistent growth underscores the strengthening academic and cultural ties between both countries.

India Issues Fresh NOTAM for Missile Test in Bay of Bengal

India has released a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and maritime safety advisory establishing an extended danger zone over the Bay of Bengal, covering a maximum range of around 2,520 km. The test window, scheduled between 15 and 17 October 2025, indicates preparations for a potential long-range missile trial.

Analysts suggest the test may originate from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, known for hosting major strategic missile tests. This move follows the successful Agni-V ICBM test conducted in August 2025, which showcased India’s capability to strike targets up to 5,000 km away. The upcoming trial is expected to further reinforce India’s credible second-strike capability and strengthen its overall strategic deterrence posture.
