India to Remain Sri Lanka’s Most Reliable Friend; Offers Modern Defence Equipment

  • India on Wednesday said it is and will remain Colombo’s most reliable friend and dependable partner as it underlined that New Delhi was willing to offer modern defence equipment to friendly partner countries like Sri Lanka. Addressing the Second India-Sri Lanka Defence Seminar here, India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, said that like in other areas, India and Sri Lanka were cooperating closely on security and defence matters.
  • “Because of our geography, our security is interlinked and intertwined. And when we speak of security, we must remember that it has acquired a wider meaning than we have traditionally associated with it,” Jha said and added, after the Covid19 pandemic and impact of Russia-Ukraine conflict, it has come to include energy, health, food and even economic security.
  • The various advanced platforms and equipment developed indigenously in India can also become viable, affordable and modern solutions for the Sri Lankan military, he said.
  • Sri Lanka’s State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Shavendra Silva and the Commanders of the Air Force and Navy apart from senior officials from the Sri Lankan Armed Forces were present on the occasion.
  • He said that under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision, India has developed “significant capability development within the Indian defence industry.

Steel Cutting of First Fleet Support Ship For Indian Navy

  • ‘Steel Cutting’ ceremony of first of the five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) was held at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam on 10 Apr 24, in presence of Shri Giridhar Aramane, Defence Secretary.
  • Contract with HSL for acquisition of five Fleet Support Ships was signed  in Aug 2023 and the ships are scheduled to be delivered to the Indian Navy, commencing mid-2027. On induction, the Fleet Support Ships will bolster the ‘Blue Water’ capabilities of the Indian Navy through replenishment of fleet ships at sea.
  • The ships, with more than 40,000 tonnes displacement will carry and deliver fuel, water, ammunition and stores enabling prolonged operations without returning to harbour, thus enhancing the Fleet’s strategic reach and mobility.

Inauguration Of Naval Pier And Residential Accommodations By Admiral R Hari

  • Admiral R Hari Kumar inaugurated one major Pier and Residential Accommodations at Naval Base Karwar on 09 April 24. The Pier 3 Offshore Patrol Vessel Pier is 350m long, capable of berthing OPVs, large survey vessels and Mine Counter Measure Vessels.
  • The pier would also provide various shore based services, such as electrical power, potable water, chilled water for air conditioning, 30 ton mobile crane and other domestic services to the ships.
  • The residential accommodation consists of 2 towers of 80 flats for Married Officers (Lt Cdr to Capt) and 149 flats of Single Officers’ Accommodation along with related amenities and external services. Further, 6 towers of Type-II accommodation consisting of 360 flats for Defence Civilians were also inaugurated.

Massive Security Deployment In Bastar For Lok Sabha Polls

  • Extensive security measures have been implemented in the Maoist-affected Bastar region ahead of the upcoming first phase of Lok Sabha elections with deployment of 350 companies of security personnel to safeguard and escort polling parties, both on foot and by road besides utilising ten IAF Mi-17 choppers assigned for polling duties.
  • Bastar is scheduled to hold its first phase of LS polls on April 19, with 1,472,207 voters expected to cast their ballots.
  • Voting will take place from 7 am to 3 pm across Bastar due to insurgency-related risks, except in Jagdalpur town, where the polling hours will extend until 5 pm.
  • According to officials at the Chhattisgarh election commission, the 350 companies of security forces will consist of over 36,000 personnel, including 249 companies of paramilitary and central armed forces already stationed in the state to counter left wing extremism.

DRDO Starts Work To Set Up Test Centre In Bengal

  • DRDO has started implementing a project in Junput village in West Bengal to build a small test centre for the country’s weapon systems, officials said on Thursday. Junput, like Odisha’s Chandipur which is known for its Integrated Test Range (ITR), is also situated by the Bay of Bengal.
  • An additional operation area is required as the existing ITR at Chandipur near Balasore has become saturated with work related to testing.
  • “As timely trials of weapon systems are of paramount importance, a plan is being implemented for an additional operation area at Junput near Digha, about 70 km from Chandipur,” the DRDO official said.
  • Junput is also 177 km from Kolkata and 40 km from Digha, a popular sea resort town.
