BSF-led Panel Formed To Monitor Situation Along Bangladesh Borders

  • Amid the ongoing Bangladesh crisis, the Union home ministry on Friday formed a committee to monitor the situation along the India-Bangladesh border and to ensure the safety of Indian nationals amid crisis in the neighbouring country.
  • The six-member committee will be headed by ADG, Border Security Force, Eastern Command.
  • Bangladesh is in the grip of a political crisis after its prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. An interim government under Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has been formed to govern the country.
  • The BSF has increased vigil along the borders adjoining Bangladesh. The security agencies have warned BSF that over 1,200 prisoners including terrorists have escaped jails in Bangladesh and could attempt to infiltrate into India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development.”

Iran To Deliver Hundreds of Ballistic Missiles To Russia

  • Dozens of Russian military personnel are being trained in Iran to use the Fath-360 close-range ballistic missile system, two European intelligence sources told Reuters, adding that they expected the imminent delivery of hundreds of the satellite-guided weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine.
  • Russian defence ministry representatives are believed to have signed a contract on Dec. 13 in Tehran with Iranian officials for the Fath-360 and another ballistic missile system built by Iran’s government-owned Aerospace Industries Organization called the Ababil, said the two intelligence officials, who requested anonymity in order to discuss sensitive matters.
  • Moscow possesses its own ballistic missiles, but the supply of Fath-360s could allow Russia to use more of its arsenal for targets beyond the front line, while employing Iranian warheads for closer-range targets, a military expert said.

Boeing Gets $2.56 Billion Contract From US Air Force

  • Boeing said on Friday it had been awarded a $2.56 billion contract from the United States Air Force for two rapid prototype E-7A AEW&C Wedgetail aircraft.
  • The contract includes lifecycle development, training and support for the U.S. E-7A fleet, the company said in a statement.
  • Last month, the U.S. Air Force said it had reached a deal with Boeing for the supply of E-7 Wedgetail airborne warning and control aircraft. It downplayed concerns that the company’s internal crisis would harm its ability to supply planes to the Pentagon.
  • The Boeing Company is an American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells airplanes, rotorcraft, rockets, satellites, and missiles worldwide.
  • Boeing was founded by William Boeing in Seattle, Washington, on July 15, 1916. The present corporation is the result of the merger of Boeing with McDonnell Douglas on August 1, 1997.

F-22 Fighter Jets Arrive In West Asia

  • United States forces successfully destroyed two Iranian-backed Houthi anti-ship cruise missiles and one Houthi ground control station in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, according to the US Central Command.
  • Additionally, US forces successfully destroyed one Houthi uncrewed surface vessel in the Red Sea.
  • USCENTCOM covers the area located between the European, Africa and Indo-Pacific Commands.Meanwhile UK’s maritime security agency on Friday issued a second incident alert following a missile attack on a vessel off the coast of Yemen.According to the US Maritime Administration, Houthis have launched over 50 attacks on shipping, resulting in casualties, vessel seizures, and disruptions to global trade routes. The campaign has forced shipping firms to seek alternative routes, impacting approximately 12 per cent of global trade that traverses the Red Sea.
  • On August 2, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered additional fighter jets and Navy ships to West Asia. The US is also taking steps to increase its readiness to deploy more land-based ballistic missile defences, the Pentagon said.On August 8, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the arrival of F-22 fighter jets to its area of responsibility.

US To Lift Ban On Offensive Weapons Sales to Saudi Arabia

  • The Biden administration has decided to lift a ban on U.S. sales of offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia, the State Department said on Friday, reversing a three-year-old policy to pressure the kingdom to wind down the Yemen war.
  • The State Department was lifting its suspension on certain transfers of air-to-ground munitions to Saudi Arabia, a senior department official confirmed. “We will consider new transfers on a typical case-by-case basis consistent with the Conventional Arms Transfer Policy,” the official said.
  • The administration briefed Congress this week on its decision to lift the ban, a congressional aide said. One source said sales could resume as early as next week. The U.S. government was moving ahead on Friday afternoon with notifications about a sale, a person briefed on the matter said.
  • “The Saudis have met their end of the deal, and we are prepared to meet ours,” a senior Biden administration official said.
