US Wants India To Use Its ‘Special Partnership’ With Russia
- The United States wants India to use its “special partnership” with Russia to put “pressure” on Moscow to stop the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and work for a durable peace in the region, US State Department spokesperson, Margaret MacLeod said.
- The US official also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous quote “This is not an era of war” which the PM had told Russian President Vladimir Putin during the SCO Summit in Bali in 2022.
- “At this NATO Summit, we are celebrating 75 years of peace, unity, development and innovation, and will discuss on the preparations for the next 75 years,” the US official said.
- Mr Modi, during his meeting with Mr Putin, stressed no solution – to the violence – could be found on the battlefield. “India has always called for respecting the United Nations Charter, including territorial integrity and sovereignty. There is no solution on the battlefield. Dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward,” Mr Modi is believed to have said.

Army Troops Fire At Pakistani Drone Along LoC in J-K’s Poonch
- Army troops fired a few rounds to shoot down a Pakistani drone along the Line of Control in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.
- The drone, however, returned to Pakistan after briefly hovering over the Indian territory late Monday night, they said.
- Indian troops, guarding the LoC, picked up the movement of a Pakistani drone at a height of over 1,000 metres at around 9.15 pm and fired five rounds within the next 10 minutes to bring it down but it managed to return, they said.
- The Jammu and Kashmir Police has announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh to anyone giving information about drones flown from across the border to drop weapons and narcotics, leading to the recovery of the material.
‘Exercise Pitch Black’ in Australia
- The India Air Force said its Su-30 MKI fighter jets are set to take part in a biennial multinational aerial warfare exercise in Australia starting later this month that will be its largest edition with participation from 20 countries across the globe. India will be part of ‘Exercise Pitch Black 24’ which will take place from July 12 to August 2.
- “Exercise Pitch Black 24 will be the largest in the exercise’s 43-year history. It will bring together 20 participating nations and over 140 aircraft from around the world, with approximately 4,435 personnel participating,” according to the website of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
- This year’s exercise will be conducted primarily from RAAF Base Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory; with additional aircraft operating from RAAF Base Amberley, located near Ipswich in Queensland, according to the RAAF’s website.
NATO Allies Commit To Sending Dozens Of Air-Defence Systems To Ukraine
- Washington: The US and an array of other NATO allies will send Ukraine dozens of air-defence systems in the coming months, including at least four of the powerful Patriot systems that Kyiv has been desperately seeking to help fight off Russian advances in the war, according to a new joint agreement. President Joe Biden announced the broader commitment when he spoke on Tuesday at the opening of the NATO summit in Washington.
- According to the statement, the US, Germany and Romania will send Ukraine additional Patriot batteries, while the Netherlands and others will provide Patriot components to make up one more battery. Italy will provide a SAMP-T air-defence system.
- Other allies, including Canada, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom, will provide a number of other systems that will help Ukraine expand its coverage. Those systems include NASAMS, HAWKs, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS and Gepards. And other nations have agreed to provide munitions for those systems.
- The Patriot systems, he said, would help prevent Russian aircraft from flying close enough to drop the glide bombs on civilians and critical infrastructure. He said Russia had been firing 3,000 bombs into his country each month.
