Myanmar: Thousands Flee To India As Insurgents Open Attack

  • Thousands of people from Myanmar crossed into India after some ethnic minority insurgent groups attacked security posts in Myanmar on Monday leading to a fresh fight erupting on two new fronts, Reuters reported.
  • This comes as Myanmar’s military junta is facing its biggest test since taking power in a 2021 coup after three ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated offensive in late October, capturing some towns and military posts.
  • Last week, the military-installed president said that Myanmar was at risk of “breaking apart” because of an ineffective response to the rebellion. The military generals say that they are fighting “terrorists”.
  • One of the three allied insurgent groups, the Arakan Army (AA), which is fighting for greater autonomy in Rakhine State in western Myanmar, seized posts in the Rathedaung and Minbya areas.
  • Notably, about 5,000 people from Myanmar crossed into India’s Mizoram state to seek shelter from the fighting, Reuters reported citing James Lalrinchhana, the Deputy Commissioner of a district on the Myanmar border.

Another High-Profile Indian Enemy Killed In Pakistan

  • Unidentified gunmen have shot and killed Maulana Raheem Ullah Tariq, a close aide of Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar, in Karachi’s Orangi Town. The Karachi police have labeled it as a “targeted killing” and an “act of terrorism”.
  • This incident marks the third high-profile assassination of terrorists focused on India this month. Previously, Akram Ghazi, a commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was gunned down in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Khwaja Shahid, one of the masterminds behind the 2018 Sunjuwan terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, was abducted and found beheaded near the Line of Control in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
  • Authorities are currently investigating the involvement of local terrorists and infighting among JeM members in Tariq’s killing. He was shot multiple times by assailants who appeared to be familiar with the area. Tariq was on his way to address a gathering against India and Kashmir when the attack took place.
