US Approves $20 Billion In Weapons Sales To Israel

  • The U.S. has approved $20 billion in arms sales to Israel, including scores of fighter jets and advanced air-to-air missiles, the State Department announced Tuesday.
  • Congress was notified of the impending sale, which includes more than 50 F-15 fighter jets, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, 120 mm tank ammunition and high explosive mortars and tactical vehicles and comes at a time of intense concern that Israel may become involved in a wider Middle East war.
  • However, the weapons are not expected to get to Israel anytime soon, they are contracts that will take years to fulfill. Much of what is being sold is to help Israel increase its military capability in the long term, the earliest systems being delivered under the contract aren’t expected until the 2026 timeframe.
  • The F-15 jets comprise the biggest portion of the $20 billion in sales with the first deliveries expected in 2029.

India To Test New SAMAR 2 Air Defence System

  • India is gearing up to test-fire its newly developed air defence system, SAMAR 2, by December, according to officials from the Indian Air Force.
  • The SAMAR 2 system, which boasts a range of nearly 30 km, is the latest addition to India’s evolving air defense capabilities. The system is developed in collaboration with two industry partners and is designed to counter a variety of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, and UAVs.
  • “The first firing trials will be carried out by December,” said one of the IAF officials in a HT report. Both SAMAR 1 and SAMAR 2 use Russian-origin air-to-air missiles.
  • SAMAR 1 is equipped with the R-73E, while SAMAR 2 will utilize the R-27 missile. These air-to-air missiles, having surpassed their shelf life and thereby becoming unsafe for aerial launch, are being repurposed for surface-to-air roles.
  • In parallel, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on Project Kusha, an indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile system.
