Indian Navy to Commission INAS 335 (Ospreys)
The Indian Navy is set to commission its second MH-60R Seahawk helicopter squadron, INAS 335, popularly known as the Ospreys, on 17 December at INS Hansa, Goa. The ceremony will be attended by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
The induction of this squadron marks a major step in strengthening the Navy’s integral aviation arm. Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, modern avionics, and advanced weapon systems, the MH-60R helicopters significantly enhance the Navy’s ability to counter both conventional and asymmetric maritime threats. Having already demonstrated their effectiveness during fleet operations, these helicopters will provide a major operational advantage in surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and surface strike roles.
In another important milestone, the Navy will commission DSC A20, the first vessel of the indigenously designed Diving Support Craft (DSC) series, at Kochi on 16 December under the Southern Naval Command. Built by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), Kolkata, DSC A20 is the lead ship of five such vessels, reinforcing India’s growing capability in indigenous naval shipbuilding.
Sagar Defence to Set Up Autonomous Maritime Shipyard
In a boost to India’s maritime technology ecosystem, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved a proposal by Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd to establish the country’s first dedicated autonomous maritime shipyard and systems development centre. The facility will be developed at Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour in Nellore district.
The project aims to transform Andhra Pradesh into a hub for next-generation maritime and autonomous systems. Apart from advancing innovation in unmanned maritime platforms, the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for nearly 750 people, including both direct and indirect jobs, while strengthening coastal industrial infrastructure and skill development.
Army Places Indigenous Drone Orders Worth ₹5,000 Crore
The Indian Army has placed large-scale orders exceeding ₹5,000 crore for domestically manufactured drones following extensive trials conducted under conditions similar to those experienced during Operation Sindoor. The selected unmanned systems are capable of functioning effectively in environments affected by electronic jamming and signal spoofing.
The procurement includes a wide spectrum of drones, ranging from short-range kamikaze platforms to longer-range systems designed for precision strikes and reconnaissance. A rigorous three-stage evaluation process was followed, including mandatory checks to eliminate components of Chinese origin. These acquisitions are being made under emergency procurement powers granted to the Army after the operation.
Notably, Munitions India Limited emerged as a key winner, securing contracts worth nearly ₹500 crore for loitering munitions—marking the first major drone order awarded to a public sector unit. In the private sector, New Space Research & Technologies, in collaboration with SMPP Pvt Ltd, secured orders worth around ₹725 crore, establishing themselves as prominent players in India’s military drone industry.
Vayuvya Defence Unveils GARUDA MK-1 UAV
Bengaluru-based Vayuvya Defence has introduced the GARUDA MK-1, a next-generation Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle designed for persistent surveillance, border monitoring, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Developed in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, the GARUDA MK-1 addresses critical operational requirements along sensitive borders such as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC). The UAV features a lightweight airframe constructed using advanced composite materials, including carbon fibre reinforced polymers, ensuring high strength with reduced weight.
This design allows the platform to achieve endurance exceeding 24 hours, while operating at altitudes between 15,000 and 25,000 feet, providing sustained real-time situational awareness and enhancing India’s unmanned aerial capabilities.
