Attack on Trump
- The US Secret Service was under intense scrutiny on Sunday after a gunman managed to evade its agents and open fire on former President Donald Trump at a political rally, with Republican leaders vowing swift investigations and President Joe Biden calling for an independent review.
- The gunman, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, injured Trump and killed a rally attendee from a rooftop perch around 150 yards (140 m) from the stage where the former president was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, officials said.
- Trump, 78, who like other former presidents has lifetime protection by the Secret Service, was swarmed by agents who then rushed him away. Agents killed the shooter, identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and an AR-15-style semiautomatic was recovered near his body, officials said.
China, Russia Start Joint Naval Drills
- China and Russia’s naval forces on Sunday kicked off a joint exercise at a military port in southern China on Sunday, official news agency Xinhua reported, days after NATO allies called Beijing a “decisive enabler” of the war in Ukraine.
- The Chinese defense ministry said in a brief statement forces from both sides recently patrolled the western and northern Pacific Ocean and that the operation had nothing to do with international and regional situations and didn’t target any third party.
- The exercise, which began in Guangdong province on Sunday and is expected to last until mid-July, aimed to demonstrate the capabilities of the navies in addressing security threats and preserving peace and stability globally and regionally.
CRPF Jawan Killed In Militant Attack In Manipur
- In a fresh incident, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed and three other security personnel injured when suspected militants ambushed a joint patrol party in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday.
- The three injured include a CRPF jawan and two Manipur police personnel. A police official said the joint patrol party came under heavy fire from the hilltop by suspected militants at Morbung village of Jiribam district bordering Assam.
- The CRPF troopers were inside a patrol SUV when the suspected insurgents opened fire. The vehicle was later found with bullet holes and its windshield shattered. The security personnel retaliated and the militants took shelter in the forest of the mountainous terrain.
Three Terrorists Killed As Army Foils Infiltration Bid
- Three terrorists were killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the army said on Sunday.
- The army said that the operation was still going on but released no information about the identity of the slain terrorists.
- The operation comes just a week after security forces killed six terrorists in two separate gunfights in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on July 6 and 7 even as the Army lost two of its soldiers who were killed in the gunfights.Four terrorists and one soldier were killed on July 6 in Chinigam, while another soldier died in Modergam. The remaining two terrorists were killed on July 7 as the Modergam operation concluded.
- On June 23, a terrorist was killed in an anti-infiltration operation by security forces near LoC in Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
India, Thailand conclude ‘Maitree’ Military Exercise
- The 13th edition of the joint military exercise Maitree 2024 between the Indian Army and the Royal Thailand Army culminated with a grand closing ceremony at Tak Province, Thailand.
- The ceremony, graced by Major General Narongrit Panikabutr, Commander of the 4th Infantry Division of the Royal Thailand Army, as Chief Guest, marked the successful completion of two weeks of intensive training and collaboration.
- From the Indian side, Group Captain Brijesh Paul, Defence Attache to Thailand, was the guest of honour.
- The joint training activities during Maitree 2024 encompassed a wide range of tactical activities including weapon training, day and night firing, rappelling, jungle survival techniques, navigation training, communication exercises, combat first aid and casualty evacuation drills among others.
