Jammu: Two BSF Personnel Injured As Pak Rangers Open Fire

  • Two BSF personnel were injured after Pakistan Rangers “resorted to unprovoked firing” on border guards along the International Border here, officials said on Wednesday.
  • The Pakistan Rangers opened fire around 8.15 am on Tuesday on the troops at the Vikram post in the Arnia sector, following which the BSF jawans fired in retaliation, the BSF said in a statement.
  • Two BSF personnel received bullet injuries in the firing and were immediately provided medical assistance, the statement said.
  • The firing incident will be taken up with the Pakistan Rangers and a protest would be lodged with them, sources said.

2,000 US Troops Put On Deployment Alert

  • The US military on Tuesday ordered 2,000 personnel to prepare for deployment to the Middle East as a show of force amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
  • Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the deployment would allow the United States “to respond more quickly” to the crisis, while the White House stressed it did not intend to put US combat forces on the ground.
  • The move comes as President Joe Biden heads to Israel on Wednesday to underscore Washington’s support for its close ally.
  • But Biden also hopes to prevent the escalating war in Gaza from spilling over into a wider Middle East conflict.

Defence Ministry signs contract for construction of the first ICG Ship                                           

  • Ministry of Defence signed a contract for the construction of one Training Ship for the ICG with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai at a cost of Rs 310 crore under the Buy category in New Delhi on October 17, 2023.
  • This is the first dedicated training platform with integral helicopter capabilities that will provide basic sea training to 70 Coast Guard and other international under-trainee officers to prepare these budding mariners on the multi-dimensional maritime aspects of Coast Guard life.
  • This training ship with advanced and modern high-tech surveillance and monitoring systems will provide profound insight and expertise to the ICG cadets on the challenges at sea while ensuring the security of coastline and offshore assets.

“Connectivity, Economic Integration With Central Asian Countries: NSA                

  • Ajit Doval on Tuesday underscored the importance of connectivity and economic integration with the Central Asian countries and said that it is a key priority for India. Doval said while participating in the second meeting of the India-Central Asia Secretaries/NSAs of the Security Councils in Kazakhstan.
  • The meeting hosted by Kazakhstan was attended by the National Security Advisers/Secretaries of the National Security Councils of India, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan.
  • Notably, India is a member of both the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Ashgabat Agreement. Doval further invited the Central Asian neighbours to utilize the Chabahar port as well as its Shaheed Bahesti terminal operated by India.

Indian Army Plans To Start ‘Chanakya Defence Dialogue’ Talk Series

  • Notably, India is a member of both the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Ashgabat Agreement. Doval further invited the Central Asian neighbours to utilize the Chabahar port as well as its Shaheed Bahesti terminal operated by India.
  • The Indian Army has initiated the process to acquire eight landing attack craft for carrying out search and rescue operations in the creek areas and river basins in different parts of the country, said the army officials.
  • The Army wants the crafts to be able to come in and out of water bodies without using a jetty. It is also moving ahead with a plan to buy six fast patrol boats under the Make in India in Defence programme, the officials added.
