Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile Successfully Flight-Tested by DRDO

  • DRDO conducted a successful flight-test of Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on April 18, 2024.
  • During the test, all subsystems performed as per expectation. The missile performance was monitored by several Range Sensors like Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System (EOTS) and Telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path. The flight of the missile was also monitored from the Su-30-Mk-I aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
  • Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh has congratulated DRDO for the successful flight test of the missile. He said that the successful development of indigenous long-range subsonic cruise missiles powered by indigenous propulsion is a major milestone. Chairman of DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat congratulated the entire team of DRDO on the successful conduct of the ITCM launch.

Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi appointed as next Indian Navy Chief

  • The government has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi as the next Chief of the Indian Navy. Tripathi is presently the Vice Chief of Navy Staff after having done multiple important assignments in his around 40-year-long vast career and he will assume his new office on April 30. He will replace current CONS R Hari Kumar.
  • Prior to taking over as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, VAdm Dinesh K Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985.

Kenyan Military Chief, Nine Others Killed In Helicopter Crash

  • Kenya’s military chief, General Francis Ogolla, died in a helicopter crash in the country’s western part on Thursday, Kenyan President William Ruto said.
  • Ruto said that General Francis Ogolla and nine other members of the military were killed in a helicopter crash. He further added that two people survived the crash. The helicopter crashed shortly after take-off on Thursday afternoon local time.

  • Nairobi: Kenya’s defence chief and nine other top brass died on Thursday in a military helicopter crash in a remote area of the country, President William Ruto said.
  • “Today at 2:20 pm, our nation suffered a tragic air accident… I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (CDF),” Ruto told reporters.
  • The president, who had convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council after news of the accident emerged, said nine other “gallant military personnel” on board were also killed while two survived.
  • Ogolla, 61, a trained fighter pilot, had only been in the post for a year but was shortly due to mark 40 years of military service.
  • Ruto said the Kenya Air Force had dispatched an investigation team to establish the cause of the crash, which took place in Elgeyo Marakwet county, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) northwest of the capital Nairobi.
  • Ogolla’s helicopter went down shortly after takeoff from the village of Chesegon, where he and his entourage had been visiting a school after making stops in other areas to see Kenyan troops and other sites.

US, UK Impose Sanctions On Iran In Response To Its Strike On Israel

  • In response to Iran’s unprecedented mass drone and missile strike on Israel, the United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on the actors involved in Tehran’s UAV program, including suppliers and customers, the White House said.
  • The sanctions target leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s Defence Ministry and many of the Iranian government’s missile and drone program.
  • “The sanctions target leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s Defense Ministry, and the Iranian government’s missile and drone program that enabled this brazen assault,” the White House statement read.
  • Iran launched several drones and missiles towards Israel in retaliation for the alleged Israeli air strike on its consulate in Syria that resulted in the killing of Iran’s three top generals, The Times of Israel reported.

Sole Woman Cadet On Ship Seized By Iran Returns

  • An Indian from Thrissur who was the only woman crew on a Israeli cargo ship that was seized by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards near the Strait of Hormuz on April 13 has safely reached home, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
  • “With the concerted efforts of the Indian mission in Tehran and the Iranian government, Indian deck cadet Ann Tessa Joseph from Thrissur, Kerala, who was among the Indian crew members of container vessel MSC Aries, has landed safely at Cochin International Airport,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had spoken to his Iranian counterpart Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian on the matter. Iran has given access of Indians on the ship to Indian officials.
